Chapter 13
"If you want to escape you seriously might want to reconsider your fitness." Matthew spoke smugly as he ran beside me.
I turned my head to glare at him only to stumble forwards. I heard a throaty laugh from beside me. He helped me to my feet quickly before the coach could see my fall and we continued forwards,
"You might want to work on that clumsiness too."
I sighed and uttered "Trust me, I would if I could."
He smiled at me and we ran alongside each other quietly for a few minutes. I figured Matthew must have wanted to ask me something since he kept along pace beside me and I was a lot slower than his jogging pace.
"So." I panted, my breaths coming out shallow, "is there something you want to ask me?"
"Uh yeah," he spoke, scratching the back of his neck, "you know I'm totally for your plan and all but uhm its been four days and you haven't even once mentioned how we're actually going to pull this off. So yeah just wondering how exactly we're going to do this."
I swallowed nervously. This was the part I was a bit sketchy on. Sure I figured out a plausible form of escape but I wasn't sure how to execute it. So I did my normal approach to a problem. I ignored it until it went away. Except I couldn't really do that now.
"Yeah about that." I began, but was interrupted by the presence of someone beside me, distracting me from what I was about to say,
"Hey sorry to disrupt your conversation but we have a little problem." Parker spoke as she jogged on my other side.
"What's wrong now?" I panted out struggling to breath. Parker smirked for a moment at my apparent exertion before she continued,
"Well Maya and Liam are missing."
Matthew snorted at this,
"Trust me I don't think we have to worry about them, I'm pretty sure they don't want to be found."
Parker rolled her eyes at this before she continued,
"I know what they're doing, I'm worried because if we're not the ones to find them there could be a repeat of last time and I don't think the coach would go so easy on them this time."
I frowned, conflicted whether or not to disturb my friend.
"Maybe we should just leave them, they're smart enough to be careful." I spoke not completely sure.
"Oh yes, cause two hormonal teenagers are always thinking about safety in these instances." he said sarcasm lacing through his words while he rolled his eyes heavily at me.
I sighed and looked around me, I could see the coach a way off berating some poor kid. His focus wasn't on the three of us so I quickly grabbed the arms of Matthew and Parker stopping us in our tracks. People started running around us giving us some cover as we ducked away into a corner.
We stayed there for a few moments to make sure the coach hadn't noticed our absence. We then quickly moved away from running kids in search of Maya and Liam. The camp was quite large so we decided it would be quickest if we searched separately. I roamed around the tents keeping out of the eye the guards when I began to hear a harsh conversation around the corner of one of the tents. It seemed to be an argument between a girl and a boy and out of curiosity I peaked around the corner to see who it was.
I was surprised to see Ian arguing with Sylvia, his girlfriend. It only then occurred to me that Ian had never mentioned bringing her along with us on our escape. It had also escaped my notice that he had hardly been seen with her in the past few days, which was why it was surprising seeing him with her now. I scolded myself for being surprised, she was his girlfriend, why wouldn't he be hanging out with her. I mentally berated myself even further when I felt the small pecks of jealousy pricking in the pit of my chest. I refused to carry feelings like this during this time. It made me feel cliche and stupid and I refused to have my thoughts anywhere than what was important. Which was the escape.
Despite myself, I found myself being nosy and listening in on their argument.
"You don't even spend time with me anymore, I'm your girlfriend and you spend more time with that stupid blonde."
"You're blonde," Ian deadpanned, "you just stereotyped yourself."
This seemed to infuriate her further and she practically spat the next words at Ian,
"You know what, I don't even know why I like you sometimes."
"Maybe we should just end it." Ian spoke quietly and I knew then that I should leave. That this was wrong and I was being a terribly nosy bitch by listening to this but I stood grounded unable to move.
I heard Ian sigh and I could imagine him rubbing his hand down his face in frustration.
"Look," he continued, "it hasn't been working for a while and I think we both would be happier if the relationship ended. I'm not the only one that might be interested in someone else, I see the way you look at him."
"It's just a dead weight now, what we had before is gone." Ian uttered so quietly I almost didn't hear him. It was quiet for a few moments before I heard a feminine sigh,
"You're right. It's not working anymore."
At this I began to quietly walk away, unnoticed. I felt guilty for listening in on an obviously private conversation and this must've been evident because as I turned the corner I saw Alena walking in my direction just finished with training, and then she spoke,
"Hey where di- what did you do?" she asked pointedly.
I gaped at her for a moment before I managed to conform words,
"I-I nothing. Why would you think I did anything? I didn't do anything. Nothing to feel guilty about here. Nope, nothing at all. Zilch, zero-"
"Lily you're an open book and if your rambling is anything to go by then you did something that you feel guilty of." she interrupted.
I groaned and shot a pained look in her direction,
"Why do you have to be so perceptive?"
"Because it annoys you and you're funny when you're annoyed." she shot back smiling brightly.
I groaned again burying my face in my hands for a moment before I looked up at her expectant expression,
"I listened in on a conversation between Ian and his girlfriend."
"Ok...." she drawled, "is that it?"
"They broke up and I was listening to every word."
She raised her eyebrows for a moment and pursed her lips, she took another moment before she responded,
"So you listened in on a conversation? I think there's worse things you can do."
"I feel like I invaded his privacy or something." I grumbled.
She sighed and placed a hand on my shoulder,
"C'mon you're gonna be ok, lets go find the others and clear that guilty look off your face. It looks like you murdered someone."
