Chapter 10
This was completely neurotic was all I could think of as I stood outside with Ian and Matthew looking at the very concrete wall in front of us. Matthew bore a serious expression as he stared at the wall in front of us while Ian just rubbed his hand across his forehead like he seems to do when he's frustrated.
"This is still as stupid as it was two hours ago," I spoke, voicing my thoughts.
We had all returned from our training session about twenty minutes ago. Matthew had ordered us to meet him outside the east end of the wall which is where we all stood now. It seems his great master plan was to stare at the wall until we saw something that would magically make it disappear.
"Well do you have any better ideas?" Matthew hissed at me.
"No but staring at a the wall isn't going to do any good, it just makes us look like complete nutters!" I frustratedly whispered back.
"Lily just shut up and concentrate." Matthew spoke still whispering.
"Concentrate on what? Its freaking concrete, there's nothing to concentrate on."
Matthew glared at me and was about to make another remark when Ian interrupted him,
"Guys why are you whispering? The guards can't hear us." Ian spoke, but he didn't seem to be concentrating on our ranting he was actually focused on the wall. He frowned and moved forwards approaching it. He ran his hand along it, giving it inspection.
"What is it?" Matthew questioned.
Ian's expression deepened further as his gaze seemingly slid across the wall. He then placed his ear against it as though he were listening for something. Confusion seemed to wash over his face before contemplation planted itself there.
"Do you find it weird that we can't hear anything on the otherside? I mean nothing. Traffic, car horns blasting, nothing."
"Well I doubt they'd plant us in the middle of a city." I spoke, wondering why this bothered him so much.
"Exactly, but if we were somewhere more desolate, like the middle of a forest or something wouldn't we hear birds or anything nature like."
Realisation dawned on both of Matthew and I's faces.
"I mean that's not the thing that bothers me most," Ian continued, "shouldn't we have heard something from the outside, I mean anything. Protests or something from parents. Don't you find it weird that it's all been so quiet."
"What you're trying to say is that we should be concerned about where we are?" Matthew asked.
"Well a little bit yeah, I mean I think if we want to escape we need to think of all aspects. We have no clue where we are and no idea what's on the other side of this wall."
Matthew frowned and seemed to think over what Ian was saying before coming to a conclusion.
"I agree with what you're saying but I think we should try and come up with a plan on how to get out first before we think of the results."
Ian nodded and returned his gaze to the wall. I heard an audible sigh from Matthew and he paced a bit before he decided what he was going to do.
"Okay this isn't helping. I'm going to have another look around the camp to see if anything mildly helpful is there. I'll see you later."
He gave us a wave and stalked off leaving Ian and I alone. We were both silent for a few minutes before I coughed disrupting the quietness. Ian turned to me only seemingly realising now Matthew was gone.
"So," I began, "this is pretty daunting, huh? 400ft wall and we've got to try and climb over it. Feels like we're in prison break. I loved that tv show. Although I don't think I'm as stealthy as Michael. He was badass though."
Ian smiled at my awkward rambling and raised his eyebrows at me before responding,
"I've never seen Prison Break."
"Oh right. If we ever get out of here you should watch it, just out of irony."
Ian laughed slightly, his brown eyes studying me for a moment. We were both quiet, just kind of glancing at each other before we were disrupted by a high pitched scream, one that was screaming my name.
"LILY! LILY!"
I searched desperately for the perpetrator only for my heart to sink when I found them.
There Maya was, being dragged by our training instructor past where Ian and I stood. I stood frozen for a moment unable to comprehend what was happening. That was until I heard the whimpers of my friend and I ran forward desperately.
I pushed people aside in my desperate attempt to reach my friend. When I had gotten closer I could see the coach's hand wrapped in Maya's long brown hair, her eyes glistened with tears of pain as she was dragged into the middle clearing of the camp.
I would not let the previous incident of today repeat. Especially with one of my closest friends. I pushed forward through the crowd for the third time, except this time absolute anger fueling my movements.
"HOW DARE YOU IMBECILE TEENAGERS ACT LIKE THIS," the coach screamed at all of us, "YOU ACT LIKE LITTLE SLUTS WHEN YOU ARE BEING HIGHLY TRAINED. YOU DISGUST ME."
Anger wracked through me even more so at his words. I was never an angry person, I was always the calm one who would sulk for ten minutes after a fight before forgiving the person. Even my fights were pretty pathetic, they usually just consisted of me getting a little flustered.
But this was real anger. And this anger fueled me to do stupid things. Just as the coach was about to hit Maya across the face I stepped up, practically snarling at the coach. Not even realising someone had joined my side in my anger, we both approached the coach.
"Don't touch her," I spat at the coach. Liam, who had stepped out with me, grabbed Maya from his grasp.
The coach's face turned beet root red from his apparent anger and the veins in his forehead were pulsing.
"You three don't understand respect, so you will have to learn it."
At this guards grabbed our arms, locking us into position.
"Bring them to solitary confinement." the coach instructed.
At this the guards dragged the three of us away, we weren't brought far. We stopped outside seven bunkers in the ground. Liam was pushed into one first and then Maya was pushed into the one next to his.
I was pushed into the third one. My eyes last landing on the stony faces of the guards before everything plunged into darkness, leaving me only with my thoughts.
