Chapter 9

There was a deafening silence for a few moments before I started laughing. Hysterically. I mean that whole spit-flying, loud, snorting type of laugh that probably looks severely unattractive. Ian was giving me a look that seemed to spell ' you're a bit psycho' and Matthew just plainly glared at me.

"Wait, you're serious?" I asked once my laughter had died down.

Matthew rolled his eyes and looked up to the ceiling seemingly with an expression that read 'why me?'

"Yes, Lily I'm serious." he replied.

Instead of bursting out laughing I responded with a disbelieving snort.

"Jeez, cause that's gonna be so easy. I mean it's not like we could be shot or anything."

"Stop being completely sarcastic for one second and actually think about it. I've been here a week and I've scrounged the whole place and the only plausible escape is over the wall." he said, his eyes holding an almost desperate look.

I sighed and rubbed my hand across my forehead. I felt bad for him. He was obviously desperate and this was his last resort. I mean it would be completely impossible. Even a small attempt at it could have us end with a bullet in our heads. The incident from a few minutes ago was high evidence of that.

I opened my mouth about to speak the harsh truth when I was interrupted,

"He has a point."

My eyes widened in surprise as I looked over to Ian who was bearing a contemplative expression.

"You've got to be kidding me." I scoffed, "Look I hate to destroy your hope but its completely ridiculous." I spoke, glancing between the two boys who both had almost comically serious expressions on their faces.

"Look, I know it seems like a long shot but it's possible. We just need incredibly careful planning and I'm not saying we try and escape tomorrow or anything, it'll need time but what do we have to lose?" Matthew explained.

"Uhm our lives." I deadpanned.

"We don't have much of a life here." Ian spoke quietly.

I could feel a headache beginning to form and a wave of tiredness seemed to crash over me. I sighed and looked up at the hopeful faces of Ian and Matthew. Although it was impossibly unrealistic I could feel a small twinge of hope forming. I knew it would probably lead to a let down or even something more serious but Ian was right. We couldn't stay here.

"Okay, we can try," I spoke, "but we're gonna need more people than the three of us."

Matthew frowned and looked at me weirdly, "Wouldn't that make it harder for us? Heavier the weight, harder to carry."

"If you think we can pull it off with just the three of us then you're not thinking straight. We're gonna need all the resources we can get."

"She's right," Ian nodded along, "if we want to pull this off we need everything to try and get through this. It may make it harder to be inconspicuous but it gives us more of a chance of the plan following through."

Matthew was about to reply but then the breakfast bell rang, cutting him off.

"We should go. We want to be as invisible as possible so that means not making a fuss."

Matthew nodded his head in agreement and we all left the tent. We made our way to the food hall and I immediately made a beeline to where my friends were sitting. Maya and Alena were chatting idly while Parker had laid her head on the table in a sleep like manner.

"Parker," I hissed while I poked her shoulder, "are you alive?"

"No, go away." she grumbled.

I continued to poke her shoulder until she let out a loud groan and lifted her head off the table.

"What do you want?" she asked glaring at me for disturbing her.

"I want your opinion on something."

"I'm not giving you boy advice."

My eyebrows furrowed in confusion before I replied,

"Boy advice? Why the hell would I ask for boy advice?"

"Uh cause you just walked out with two boys at your side from some tent. Then come over here and ask for my opinion on something. This is the part in rom coms where the main character asks her best friend 'which one should I choose, oh dear, my life is so hard.' I refuse to do this on principle of its ridiculousness. Seriously Lily I expected better."

I stared in shock at her for moment before I properly understood what she was getting at,

"What ew no I'm not having some love triangle. That'd be weird. God you always make things so weird."

Parker shrugged and raised her hands in mock surrender,

"Just sayin what it looked like."

I gave her one of my exasperated stares before I spoke again,

"We're off topic here. I wanted to ask you something." I looked around to see if anyone was listening, "what would you say about trying to escape by climbing over the wall?"

Parker snorted and replied,

"That's even more ridiculous than my theory."

I turned back to the table staring at the indents in the wood. It did sound pretty stupid. Like me, Parker couldn't take it seriously. Hell, I couldn't understand how anyone could.

"Why do you have this expression on your face that spells 'I wish I was joking but unfortunately I'm not and now I'm involved in something that makes me want to hit my head on a hard surface.'"

"Wow my face really says all that?" I replied sarcastically, still focusing on the notches in the wood.

"Oh my God you're serious. What the hell is wrong with you? You'll be freaking shot down if you even look at the wall too long how on earth are you going to climb over it?" she whispered almost angrily.

"We don't know yet."

"What do you mean 'we'?" she said, using air quotes.

"Uh remember the two boys I walked out with?"

At this point she smacked me in the arm,

"Ow! What the hell was that for?"

"For being an idiot. You're being an idiot."

I rubbed my now sore arm while I replied,

"I know it's a freaking stupid plan, ok? Bu-"

"Good, no need to elaborate, no but." she interrupted.

At this she turned away from me to continue eating her food and she clearly gave off the message of 'don't speak to me.'

I groaned and followed suit, picking at my food. All that was playing on my mind was how we were going to convince people to take up on our plan.

It was probably going to be harder than the stupid plan itself.
