Chapter 6
Ian, Ian's girlfriend and I all stood there awkwardly for a few moments. I couldn't remember her name for the life of me and Ian just kept glancing between the two of us like a lost puppy. I decided to break the awkward tension as Ian seemed at a loss as what to do.
"Uhm, hi I'm Lily." I said, smiling at her.
"I know" she replied curtly.
It was silent for a few more moments before she decided to speak.
"C'mon Ian lets go."
Ian shot me an apologetic look before being dragged away. I gave him an awkward wave and watched them leave.
"Sooooooo that was awkward huh?"
I turned around to the devious face of my friend Maya.
"Don't even think about it." I said starting to walk away.
Maya mocked a shocked expression and ran up to walk along side me.
"What do you mean?"
"You have that look on your face. You know the look where you start getting this plan on how to set two people up. I do not want to be set up with Ian. We're just friends if you could even call it that and plus he has a girlfriend."
"You know there was this movie once where the two people were ' just friends'. You know what happened at the end. They weren't just friends!"
I gave her a tired look and entered my tent, she followed in closely behind me continuing her speech.
"If you like someone you should fight for them. I don't think he would take much convincing anyway. Did you see the way he was around Sylvia." Oh so that was her name. " He looked like he had just been kicked in the manhood."
I raised my eyebrow at her while she continued,
"I mean c'mon I know you Lily, you're just going to let it slide because he has a girlfriend."
I let out a sigh and sat down on my bed.
"Look Maya I know you're trying to make me feel better and stuff but I think we have worse things to worry about than teen drama. I mean we're in a freaking prison camp for God's sake. My pressing concerns aren't if Ian likes me or not."
"But you have thought about it."
I let out a groan and plopped back onto the bed. I'd do anything to just stop talking about this.
"So you and Liam?"
Maya blushed madly at my words and bit her lip and looked down at her feet. Before she could reply to my question though we heard shouting outside the tent. I thanked the heavens for a distraction and with Maya rushed out of the tent to see what the commotion was.
It took a few seconds for us to find where the action was happening. A group of people had converged around something. Out of curiosity, I elbowed my way to the front to see what was happening. Two boys were fighting in the centre. Well, pushing each other with angry faces.
Next thing one of the boys hit the other across the face. It was then I remembered the rules of the guards that had only been spoken to me a few hours ago,
If you should harm another component of this tent or of this camp you shall be terminated.
By the look in the eyes of the boy who had been hit, he was certainly going to give the other boy more than a black eye. So I did something stupid. I stepped in between them.
"Hey, hey, hey, hey. Why don't we calm down here." I said as confidently as I could while placing a hand on the chest of fuming boy. He had dark hair and brown eyes and looked to be about sixteen.
"Move." he practically spat at me.
"No." I spoke in as sinister a tone as I could, "if I move you'll be killed by the guards and he's not worth it."
The dark haired boy was panting loudly but he didn't move. I took this as my cue to take him away. I grabbed his arm and pulled him away from the group. I heard the other boy shout after him,
"You're a coward!"
I felt him stiffen beside me and he was just about to turn back before I pulled him harder and brought him into the tent. Alena was sitting on her bed, reading, when we entered. Her eyes widened with surprise when she saw me dragging the boy, with a black bruise now forming around his left eye, inside.
"What happened?" she asked, setting her book on the bedside table.
"This idiot got into a fight." I replied while fumbling in my drawers looking for something to wipe the blood that was trickling down his temple.
"Hey! Thats offensive." he said, for the first time appearing somewhat calm.
"Shut up! What the hell were you thinking?" I snapped at him.
He shrugged and replied,
"He annoyed me."
Alena's mouth dropped open and stared at him, gaping at him like a fish before she recovered her composure.
"Yeah she's right, you're an idiot."
"You're an idiot."
Alena and I both stared at him for a moment before we both replied,
"That's really the best you could come with?"
He rubbed his forehead before answering,
"I'm tired."
I eventually found a cloth. I wiped the cloth against his temple cleaning up the blood.
"What's your name?"
"Matthew."
"Okay Matthew, you're going to leave and you're going to stop being an idiot and lay low. If the guards had seen what you did you could be dead. Do you understand that?"
"I'm not five." he replied crossing his arms over chest like a petulant child.
"Then stop acting like you are." Alena answered for me.
He sighed and got up.
"Thanks."
With that he left, leaving me and Alena with only a bloody cloth.
