Chapter Five
PERCYPercy stood with his arms folded. The twins sat in front of him. "Can we go now, sir?" one of them, possibly Diana, asked.
"No," he snapped. He sat down on the edge of his desk. "What is this room? Eh?"
"A-a classroom," presumably Philippa stammered.
"That's right, kid," Percy said, careful not to use a name - he could never tell the girls apart, ever. "And what comes with every classroom, may I ask?" He waited for a reply. "No? How about some suggestions? I mean, everything in this room is a necessity, girls. Look around you for your inspiration. Or in front of you. Or at yourselves."
He'd lost them.
"A classroom requires a teacher!" Percy said in exasperation. "Today, I was the teacher who taught in this classroom. Of course, I usually teach outside in the arena. However, Mr Valdez was in need of cover after a medical emergency with an old friend of ours. What else does a classroom need, hmm?"
Phillippa or Diana whispered something. Percy glared at the girl who'd spoken. "Louder!" he barked.
"Students," the girl said shakily.
"Yes. And in a classroom, where we learn, I expect you to listen and to be students. Instead, today, you two were disrespectful." Percy's voice raised. "I am your teacher! I had authority today, and you both disregarded this. Well, it's come back to bite you on the - well, you know what I mean. Your cabin will receive a punishment warning, a new inspection and a banishment from all Capture the Flag games - whether whole camp games or individual - this month."
One of the girls protested. "Sir, all we did was -"
"I don't care!" Percy shouted. "You have cost your whole cabin their dignity and their privileges with your rude, careless behaviour. I will personally make sure that they know that, so I suggest you tell them first. Now go."
The girls looked at each other.
"Get out!" Percy yelled.
The girls jumped from their seats and headed to the door. Thalia stood in the doorway, arms crossed, and stepped aside as the girls rushed past her.
"That was harsh," she said, walking into Percy's classroom and closing the door behind her.
"They were disrespectful," Percy said quietly.
"You're using your own personal issues against them!' Thalia snapped. She leant over Percy's desk and stared at him. "I know seeing Annabeth hurts. But your divorce was six years ago. Come on, Percy, move on!" Thalia sighed. "She has."
"Don't you think I know she has?" Percy rested his heads in his hands. "How did this all happen, Thalia? Annabeth and I were in love. I wanted kids. A boy, a girl. How could we have never had kids? It was our destiny, I swear it was!"
Thalia groaned. "Percy, I have watched over you for many years now. The day Annabeth ended your marriage, she packed her bags and came to stay at mine. And she made me swear on the River Styx to protect you like a sister would. In my eyes, you are my brother, Percy. You always will be. But Annabeth too is my sister. I can't watch you play with her feelings like this. It's not fair on her, not after everything she's built up with Andrew."
"She's a liar!" Percy shouted. "She has not told Andrew who she is. What she is."
"And what is she?"
"A demigod!" Tears fell down Percy's cheeks. "She has been with this man for years, is now engaged to him - and he doesn't even know who she is!"
Thalia ran to Percy and hugged him. He resisted, at first, but then collapsed onto her shoulder. "I love her," he sobbed quietly. "Th-Thalia, I love her."
