Pristine white walls and stainless tiled floors. Rows of endless beds with tidy and tucked beige sheets, old knitted blankets folded, and at the end of each. Soundless and serene. No movement beyond the flicker of the second hand on the clock. The faint sound ticking away, one after another. As the hours passed by, remote footsteps drew closer. The sound of chipping heels against the tiled floor joining the ticking of the clock. Clicks and scribbles of a ballpoint pen scuffing on paper as the chipping stopped nearby. Another set of footsteps hit hard and with haste. Doors at the far end flung open as the sticky sound of gloves being pulled and snapped. Wheels followed, with a small team bringing in machines and bags of fluid.

"I will need those tests done ASAP and get me 30 mg of ketamine and 10 mg of diazepam."

"IV catheter in place."

"Heart rate stable."

"Respiration rate stable."

"Doctor, her blood work suggests she is incompatible with our current donor. She won't make another night without a transfusion. Our only option is..."

The doors flung open, hitting the walls with incredible force as a round of gulps and gasps filled the space.

"Use mine!" He yells storming over.

"Do it, I don't care what you take, just don't let her die."

"Yes your majesty, right away. Please sit and we'll begin with 4 units."

His body slides slowly down into the armchair beside the bed. His fingers gripping the armrest and digging into the fabric. "Save my cherished. May she live and thrive beside me. Please return her fiery spirit. I beg you, bring her back to me."

"I have done everything. Everything you asked for. Please stop this! All I want is for this to end and to be with him at last." The word tumbles out as I step from the shadow. The office desk edge dug into my pelvis as I laid both palms flat on the oak wood.

"You already know the answer to that."

My jaw clenched as I met her gaze, the ghostly apparition of myself disappearing as her focus fell back to the sprawling papers overlaying a map. Her finger traces the outline of the Northern Mountain border. With three quick taps of her nail, she smiles.

"You see this, this is..."

"You can't take this away from me," I slam my palms onto the spot she traced. "Please, I won't survive without him." I forced out as my voice cracks.

Wood scraping against the marble floor interrupts my cries. Slow steps graced the floor until a clap came from Charlotte. Her slender figure was already rebuilt after bringing life into the world. Dropping a black woolen hooded robe to the ground as soft deep mauve silk hung loosely off her frame. The colors were radiant against her pale milky complexion and untouched by sunlight. She slowly stalked from behind the desk and rested her hand out in front of herself. They hid a coy smirk behind long layers of raven tresses, tangled in delicate waves that fell to her waist.

"Look at you, look at what the urge has done to you." She clenches her hand into a fist. "Don't you see what pain the gift brings to those who submit to it?" Each word ran off her tongue like a serpents' hiss.

Rage seethed within me. Weeks of neglect grew upon my appearance, my skin dull, dry to the touch. bruised crepe folds underneath each eye as I continued to let my emotions run rampant. I could feel the sticky secretion mix with dirt as it clung to the strands of unwashed hair. Stress and torment only caused this to worsen. I hadn't felt sane in weeks to keep up this illusion.
