Your life crumbled the day Kjartan and Sven burned down your childhood home. Your Danish family lived under the chieftain Ragnar Ravnsson. You lost your family, most of your friends, and your boyfriend, Uhtred Ragnarsson. Sven Kjartansson kidnapped both you and Thyra.

For years, the only company you had was Thyra and the hounds you both kept close to you.

As time progressed, Sven grew terrified of both of you. Your heart had hardened and you had become fierce, waiting for the day you could plot your revenge. You figured hope was gone for someone to be rescued, so it was up to you to save yourself.

The only problem was you couldn't figure out how to escape the gates. Every single person within the walls knew who you were. Kjartan made sure of this all the days he had you publicly humiliated. The agonizing beatings, assault, and verbal abuse made you one of the most popular women in the area. Soon, you'd give them a better reason to know your name.

The day came for you to make your attempt. Sven slowly crept into the room, making sure not to startle or anger you, Thyra, nor the hounds.

He opened the door to hand you some food. You snatched the tray from him and hit him in the head with all of your might. The hounds came to your side, ready to assist you if need be.

"How dare you!" Sven grabbed your arm, but quickly let go when the hounds approached him.

While he was distracted, you kicked him in his private areas and then in his kneecap. As he crumbled to the floor, you escaped the building through the entrance. You slipped on a dress and hood that belonged to a woman you did not know and remained in the shadows the best you could.

Thyra had not followed you, but two of the large dogs did.

Once Kjartan heard of your escape, he rallied men to search for you. To add incentive, he stated that whoever found you could do whatever they wanted, as long as they brought you back alive.

That request was quickly cut short when their perimeters were attacked. The chaos provided you with the distraction that you needed. Word spread around the fortress that Uhtred and Ragnar Ragnarsson were trying to ambush and get revenge on Kjartan.

You were grabbed roughly from behind. You allowed your focus to be on the thought of seeing Uhtred long enough for you to be captured. The man that found you dragged you to the front to his leader. Kjartan brought you up to the ramparts and forced you to stand in between him and his son.

He screamed out to the men trying to ram the walls in. "Uhtred, Ragnar, you will never enter, nor will you ever see your sister and woman again."

You tried to pull back against his grip as he tried to throw you over the side of the ramparts. Thankfully, they quickly became distracted by a breach in their walls. Your eyes recognized the tall, long haired man you thought you'd never see again. Kjartan dragged you by your hair down the stairway as he made his way to Uhtred Ragnarsson.

You were held within the lines of the men as Uhtred and Ragnar's army overwhelmed the enemy. As Kjartan orders his troops to pull back, he caught sight of Thyra's hounds killing his son.

"You have lost your son, now what do you have left to stand for?" You spat out at the older man.

His eyes were filled with fury and despair. Grabbing you once more, he threw you in between both armies. You fell to your knees. When you lifted your head, the first pair of eyes to lock onto yours were Uhtred's.

"Y/n?" He said just loud enough for you to hear.

"You want your woman back, Uhtred, you better leave now." He ordered one of his archers to focus an arrow to your head.

"Uhtred, don't do it! Save Thyra and complete your mission! Please!" You begged. You didn't want to make him choose between his past love and his sister.

Ragnar spoke next. "Kjartan, you are beaten. Either you die alone or together with all your men! What is it to be?" He then cast his gaze upon you. "Do not bring a woman into this. You only show your cowardice more."

Angered by the loss of his son and the insult of his character, Kjartan pushed through his men. He kicked you to the side roughly. Uhtred cried out for you, but the older man's challenge was heard over his cry. "You wish to fight me, Baby Ragnar?"

Uhtred ran to your side and brought you back to stand next to Brida. Ragnar responded, "No, I wish to kill you."

Kjartan announced the fight to be over and called upon Ragnar to face him. Brida tried to convince Ragnar to back down, but the son of the former Earl ignored her pleas. You grabbed onto your childhood friend in contest. Uhtred hushed the both of you and moved you back. The men formed the square to prep for the battle.

You watched in terror as Ragnar defeated Kjartan mercilessly. All the years of hatred and Ragnar's vendetta against the traitor were revealed as he beat his enemy's face in with his sword.

When it was all over, Uhtred embraced you into a hug. "I thought I had lost you in that fire, y/n. Everyday I lived with the hope of seeing your face again. If I had known he had you, I would have come sooner. I am sorry."

You buried your face into his chest, forcing the tears not to fall. "Do not apologize, my love. You are here now and that is what matters. I had thought that you had forgotten me."

Uhtred chuckled. "I could never forget you, y/n. I dream not of it."

Your hounds laid at your feet, unbothered by Uhtred's presence. You laughed at this. "My hounds are not threatened by you. Maybe you are a good man after all, Ragnarsson."

"It is your love that makes me a good man." He kissed your forehead. "The gods have blessed me to allow you back into my life once again."
