For the rest of the school day, Garrett was quiet. He was also quiet when at home. He went to his room and did his homework and played with his guitar. A few hours later, Ray came home from work and said, "honey, I'm home!" He then noticed Garrett wasn't on the couch watching TV. Ray looked at his wife and asked, "June, where's Garrett? I'm normally used to him watching a show with his sister."

"Garrett's in his room," replied June, "he's been awfully quiet since he and Sunset came home. And he doesn't look happy. He says he's fine, but I'm worried about him... Should I talk to him?" Ray gave a pondering look and said, "I can talk to him after dinner and see what's happening... Maybe it's a boy thing. I'm sure it's nothing serious." Much later, it was dinnertime, and the family was having Hamburger Helper for dinner. Garrett wasn't eating much, and he didn't have much to say. "Garrett, are you okay?" June asked in concern, "you haven't eaten your Hamburger Helper." Garrett looked at June and said, "oh, I'm fine. Just trying not to get a belly ache or anything like that..." Ray cleared his throat and said, "hey son, when we're finished with dinner, how about we go on a drive to get some ice cream from Sugarcube Corner, you and me, Father and Son?" Garrett shrugged and said, "sure, I guess ice cream would be nice..." This motivated him to continue eating his Hamburger Helper. Sunset understood this was a private thing between her father and her brother, so she decided not to meddle in anything.

Soon dinner was finished, and Ray was ready to take Garrett to the car. As Garrett went outside, Ray looked at his wife and gave her a thumbs up and a wink, indicating that he got this. Ray and Garrett then got in the car, and Ray started driving. Ray looked at his son and asked, "Garrett, is something wrong? You can tell me if you're having a problem, I'll listen. That's what I always do." Garrett looked at his father and asked, "you promise not to tell Sunset?" Ray nodded and promised, "this conversation will not leave this car." Garrett sighed and asked, "you know about Sunset's friend, Twilight Sparkle?" Ray nodded and confirmed, "of course. I work with her father and your mother is friends with her mother..." Garrett sighed and confessed, "well... I have a crush on her... I asked if she wanted to hang out with me... She told me she's in a relationship with someone else..." Ray gave a look of surprise and said, "oh my... Is that what's gotten you so down?" Garrett nodded sadly. "She told me that she didn't want things to get awkward between me, Sunny, and her because of this," said Garrett, "and that she didn't want to ruin any friendship we formed, which is understandable. I told her that I wouldn't force her to do anything she didn't want to do and that her happiness is what really matters. I am happy for Twilight Dad, but I'm sad because I can't be with her. And I'm not jealous of Leo... Am I petty for not being happy?"

Ray shook his head and said, "no son... It's okay to feel sad after being rejected, even when you want the person you love to be happy. The fact that you want Twilight to be happy and not force her to do anything really shows how mature you've grown, Garrett. Everyone has conflicted feelings like these every now and then. And you're not petty for thinking that. It shows that you're human." They then went inside Sugarcube Corner and ordered ice cream. Once they got their ice cream, they ate it outside. "Trust me Garrett, it gets easier over time," assured Ray, "there are plenty of others out there." Garrett looked at his father and asked, "you think so?" Ray nodded and said, "I know so. I've had my fair share of rejection. When I was in college, I dated a girl, and her best friend was dating my best friend at the time. Then my girlfriend cheated on me with my best friend at the time. I ended up dating my ex best friend's ex girlfriend, and that woman was your mother."

"Whoa, really?" Garrett asked in surprise. "Yes really," said Ray, "your mom and I agree, that heartbreak was a blessing in disguise. At least it gave me you and Sunset. Trust me Garrett, it'll get easier." Garrett smiled, and when he and Ray were finished with their ice cream, Garrett said, "thanks for listening, Pop." He was glad that he could always turn to his father for advice.
