Krystal laid on the floor, motionless. She barley slept and spent most of the night in Nancys room in the tent. She clutched everything that she had left if Nancy and tried not to cry.
Today is always the hardest. Well, today and that unbearable day in July.
She wore Nancys sweatshirt and clung to her favorite bear, Sam. Nancy named him after the one in the movie Sleepless in Seattle.
"Happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you. Happy birthday dear Nancy, happy birthday to you." She whispered through her tears. Glancing at the butterfly clock on the wall, she sighed. She still had another hour until she needed to be up.The school halls seems more treacherous and all consuming than before, but it always feels like that on Nancys birthday. She is suffocated by her sisters absents.
She'd be 22 today.
Krystal doesn't mind forgetting herself at all if it meant remembering Nancy. For her, that's all that mattered, Nancy.
Blake passed Krystal in the hall between first and second period, her eyes were trained on the floor and her hair making a shield from judging eyes. She never even saw him. He planned to tell her about it in their joined class. Anxiously, he has to wait until then.
"Your late, Krystal." Mrs. Greene informs her as she enters the class. She has no rebuttal or sly comment, she just nods and sits in her normal spot. The chair next to her was occupied by her best friend, Blake but today, she ignored him. His presence.
What am I going to say to him? How am I going to explain this. Will he understand?
Something is wrong, I feel it. She's not the Krystal I know, she's gone back to the girl who hides in the shadows.
Blake watched her, waiting for the moment when the class was allows to talk freely. Krystals focus was on the table top in front of her, she didn't dare acknowledge his stare. She knew that would open the flood gates of concern for him. She wasn't ready for that, not get. Krystal filled open her notebook and started to scribble. It was her way of expressing how she felt. He glanced down at her agenda and noticed the entire day was scribbled our but a small present was drawn at the bottom. A lightbulb clicked in his head. Blake pulled up his Facebook reopened Krystals page, the one he's stalked 100 times. Her picture was of Nancy and her. There wasn't a single picture of Krystal after. He found Nancy in her friends list and views her profile. He was right.
It's Nancys birthday.
The rest of the class Krystal was radio silent and Blake didn't push, nor did he have the space to. Mrs. Greene talked the entire class. Krystal trudged on to her next class before lunch, Blake on the other hand, skipped.

Krystal sat in the library ignoring everyone. Blake hasn't joined her and she didn't mind one bit, she was already doing her best to hold in her tears. No one likes to cry to the public. Silently, a gift slid in front of her. Her eyes traveled up the arm to the person it was attached to. Blake Hardy. He held a small, personalized cake took.
"What is this?" She croaked. Krystal hadn't realized how dry her throat was since she hasn't spoke since this morning.
"For Nancy." He breathed. Her jaw dropped.
"How did you know?"
"Promise not to find it creepy or hate me if I tell you?" She nodded slowly, he sank into the chair next to her. "I saw the present on your planner and then I looked up Nancys old Facebook and saw it was her birthday. I figured that was the reason for your mood." He spoke softly. That might be mildly creepy but the gesture was so overly sweet I can over look the creepiness.
"Thank you." Her voice crackled with sadness. Blake smiled softly. "Do you want to visit her with me tonight?"
"I'd love too." She nodded, the grim look on her face lifted.
