Helen does not liked to be touched, yet he allowed Tom to grab onto his arm excitedly and point at the popcorn machine about the same time as y/n did so. Helen didn't smack his hand away at all. Y/N felt confused as he exchanged eye contact with Tom, who seemed to give him a certain look.
"Helen, do you want popcorn?" Tom asked to which Helen politely nodded. Tom ran over to the cashier and the two other boys waited patiently. Y/N's feelings from before began to swell in his stomach. He didn't like Tom. He didn't like what Tom was doing. He didn't want for Helen's and his relationship to split.
He was scared.
Y/N was scared, he decided. He was scared that Tom could ruin everything for him. He remembered the moments at the tree, how he cut him off when he tried to say something and how he grabbed Helen's attention in his fists like it was nothing. Y/N looked around in anxiety. He knew Jon wouldn't be in the main part of the building. He's beside stage, getting prepared. Jon couldn't save him.
"I think I'll get some candy." Y/N said to Helen, who nodded his head and watched as he went to the counter. Tom seemed to ignore him as y/n scaled the rows until he found [favorite candy]. He gave a small smile as he slid the candy onto the counter, waiting for the cashier, who was currently at the popcorn machine. Y/N turned to Tom, his expression suddenly going stern.
"Just what are you planning?" He asks in almost a growl.
"What do you mean?" Asks Tom.
"Don't play stupid with me, Tom. What's your goal? Why are you trying to separate Helen and me?"
Tom gives y/n that certain look again. That look y/n can't quite pin down. Tom must be planning something. Suddenly, he smirks.
"I'm not? He's just made a new friend. Someone. . ." he looked at y/n up and down, "better. You're too possessive and protective. Unlike you, I give him space to breathe." Tom takes the popcorn from the woman and gives her a charming smile. He glances at Helen, who was looking around patiently.
"Don't make me sound like the bad guy! You know what you're doing."
"I'm not making you the bad guy, I'm just stating the facts. Give him some space, you weirdo. Don't be so obsessed with him." Tom gave a disgusted look as he adjusted his glasses and headed over to Helen. Just like that, their conversation was over.
Y/N did not know how to react. Obsessed? He wasn't obsessed with Helen, right? No, of course not..! Right..? Right..? Y/N was not sure of himself anymore.
"Uhm.. sir? Your money?"
Y/N looked up at the cashier, who shifted on her feet uncomfortably from the small bit of the fight she had heard. "Oh! I'm sorry!" Y/N smiled sheepishly and dug in his pocket, pulling out some money and handing it to her. She gave a small smile and looked around for a moment. She handed him the candy and slid over a pack of bubble gum.
"Here. Go on, take it. I've already paid for it, so don't worry. I hope you feel better." She smiled and ruffed his hair a bit. Y/N smiled brightly and almost jumped over the counter to hug her. ,
"Thank you, miss! You're the best!" Y/N thanked excitedly, shaking his hands around in joy. He stuffed the gum into his pocket and ran over to his friends.
Despite being in a happier mood, y/n still distanced himself from Helen. He silently chewed on a piece of bubble gum and did nothing but watch the play, trying to ignore Tom and Helen's occasional whispers to one another.
When the play was over, Jon looked around for his group of friends, but y/n was already at his side.
"Y/N! Hey! Did you like the- what's wrong..?" Jon asked, watching as y/n gritted the gum between his teeth. He looked up to see Tom conversation away with Helen, who listened, barely speaking back, as usual.
"Did something happen between you and Helen?" Jon asked.
"Can I have a hug?" Y/N asked, ignoring Jon's question. Jon opened up his arms and y/n immediately leaned into him. Y/N buried his face into Jon's shoulderblade. Jon soothingly rubbed his back.
"What happened?" Jon asks gently. Y/N explains Tom's words and how it's been messing with him. How he wants to give Helen space, but he can't. He didn't feel whole without Helen. It was like Helen was apart of him. He needed Helen in his life. Trying to avoid him would hurt too much.
"I don't feel good. I feel like even if I were to avoid him, he wouldn't notice because he's too busy with Tom. I feel. . . replaceable, Jonathan..." y/n sighed.
"You're not replaceable, y/n. You never have been and you never will be. You're amazing, okay? You're so cheerful, bright, funny, selfless, caring, smart, and so, so much more. I don't know what's up with Tom, so maybe talk to Helen privately?"
Y/N lets out another shaky sigh. "I feel as if he wouldn't believe me."
"You're his friend. I know Helen. He's going to listen to your feelings. Perhaps even discuss the issue with Tom."
"I guess." Y/N shrugged, finally pulling away.
"Do you want to come over to my house later? Just you and me." Y/N asked. Of course, Jonathan agreed as he smiled in return, feeling as if comforting y/n would be more pleasant at a more soothing and private location.
"Are you comfortable with walking over there to Helen and Tom?" Jonathan asks softly. Y/N looked over at the two, where it was as much as a conversation it could be with Helen being a very quite teenager. He nodded and Jonathan ruffled his hair, walking over to the two.
"Hey! Did you two enjoy the show?" Jon asks, feeling proud of his performance. Y/N stuck his head out from behind Jonathan, to which it was obvious of their height difference to Helen.
Helen was unsure of what word to use to describe his friend. Awe? Appealing? Enchanting? Cute? Cute was a word that resembled attraction in an endearing and delightful way. Helen felt this emotion, he decided. Y/N reminded Helen of a puppy.
Meanwhile, y/n poked his head out only to look at Tom. They exchanged eye contact and y/n felt sour again. He stood beside Tom, attempting to be intimidating at least in the slightest, but Tom didn't buy it (and frankly, no one else did either).
It was like a stare off. If one were to blink, to look away, to show fear for even the slightest second, it would be over for them. Completely done. Whoever won also won Helen's friendship. Y/N wasn't gonna go down with a fight. Y/N may have backed off and been in a bad mood earlier, but now he was going to do anything to get Helen's attention.
Anything.
