"So what was the nightmare you had last night?" I asked as we began pushing the shopping cart home "wanna talk about it?"
"Oh it was just the normal," she sighed "car crash"
"I had a nightmare like that too" I recalled "I have theme most nights really"
"Same, since the accident I can't stop worrying about something like that happening again" Cassie admitted. Suddenly she stopped dead in her tracks "Jordyn" she whimpered "what if that did happen... are we dead?"
"Aww of course not Cass, this is some kind of strange dream or hallucination or whatever, and we're gonna snap out of it any minute" I reassured her, patting her back comfortingly. She smiled at me and I knew I had succeeded in pacifying her.
"Now then Cass," I grinned "tell me more about this Denny guy." Cassie laughed
"You see, 'this Denny guy' just moved here like a month ago, and i've had a crush of him since like day 1" she giggled
"Would this Denny guy happen to be hot?" I asked, wiggling my eyebrows
"Oh don't even get me started on how hot he is" Cassie laughed "and guess what, he lives right down the street from us!" Cass had never opened up to me this much, so I was trying to keep it going for as long as I could. I knew she wanted a boyfriend, so this was a big development. I think Cassie's the kind of kid who would find a lover in high school, and stay with them for her entire life, she's very loyal in that way. I know my sisters better than I know myself, so I know Cass would benefit from having a boyfriend who would give her purpose, and talk her down when she's mad.
"When we get home Cassie, let's just unpack all this stuff and go to sleep, okay? We've been walking for hours today, so I think we just need an early night." I announced
"Hopefully when we wake up tomorrow we'll be back home" Cassie sighed "I just wanna see Daddy right now"
"Me too Cass, me too."
As planned, we went home, dumped our food in the fridge, and went straight to sleep. We were exhausted.
"Cass, can we sleep in the twins' beds tonight?"I asked "I don't wanna be alone today."
"Sure Jory, I think we'll both sleep easier this way." she responded, to my relief. So that was our first night, we drifted into sleep together in tiny princess beds that smelled like toddler puke. I listened to Cassie's breathing slow to snoring, and then finally allowed myself to lose consciousness.
"Please come back, we can't get by without you" Whispered a voice that sounded strangely like Edith "I keep trying to remember the last thing I said to you" the voice descended into tears, as I woke up.
"CASSIE" I yelled, the second I woke up, my heart sank as I got a reply
"Jory?" she replied
"Oh god, we're still here Cass"
"Oh god" She sighed "Jory, I think I heard Edith in my dream last night"
"So did I" I gasped "she said something about trying to remember the last thing she said to me"
"I heard her begging me to come back, whatever that means" Cassie added
"This just keeps getting weirder and weirder" I mumbled
"Yup"
"What do we do now Cassie?"
"I guess let's go check all the rest of the neighbor's houses, just in case." She sighed "I don't know what else we can do..."
