A rating game was a game of Chess.
But neither Rias nor Riser knew that they were playing with a Grandmaster.
Y/N's personality completely changed after Riser's uninvited visitation. He never needed to hide his true self anymore, which resulted the 'bullies' disappearing with no traces of their bodies.
This also inadvertently increased the distance between Y/N and the rest of Rias's peerage.
But that didn't matter to him.
Y/N sat in a room with a chessboard in front of him. He took his Queen and moved it up a few spaces.
"Checkmate, Nee-sama." Y/N said before standing up.
"Four moves and I've lost." Grayfia sighed before looking at him. "Are you sure this is the path you want to take? It will lead to nothing but unhappiness for you. I'm worried."
"Don't worry, Nee-sama. Don't you trust your younger brother?" Y/N shot her a grin before stretching.
"That's precisely why I'm worried."
"The pieces are already in play. They're working hard training as we speak. I'm sure Issei has this under control." A summoning circle appeared from underneath his feet. "See you during the rating game, Nee-sama."
When Y/N disappeared, Grayfia couldn't help but sigh once more and then look back to the chess board. She wasn't bad at Chess in the slightest, and yet she fell for one of the most common finish to a chess game.
The Scholar's Mate. A check in four moves. Just four.
Y/N reappeared near the training grounds, and he could already feel the energy from Akeno and Rias's training.
He took a step before covering his mouth and coughing violently into his palm. When he examined it, there was blood.
"I didn't expect him to give us that long to train. Looks like he's better than I give him credit for." He muttered to no one other than himself.
He leaned against a tree for support and to regain his energy. He was dying. There wasn't a doubt about that. When Riser betrayed Y/N, he underestimated how much Riser had prepared and it took everything he had to prolong his life, which meant sacrificing his powers.
In his current state, one hit from Issei will damage him much more than it should. His body is slowly decaying, and he will see to it that Issei wins.
No matter the cost. He is the protagonist after all.
But.. ten days.
That's the amount of time he has left to live, by his approximation. Which meant he can use the time to coach Issei on the best possible moves he should take, and perhaps even offer advice to the others if they were willing. Looks like Rias will be getting her wish of never seeing him again after ten days after all.
Everyone apart from Issei and Koneko harboured anger towards him. They didn't like being used. They didn't like their lives being dictating by HIM, of all people.
But they think he's stronger than he actually is. Which is why they accepted his help. That was what he actually needed them to do, so he had a reason to join them in training.
He took a few deep breaths and changed his composure before walking towards the training grounds, where Kiba and Issei were.
"It's not simply about swinging your sword. Watch your opponent and surroundings." Kiba adviced Issei as he continued to miss and swing the sword awkwardly.
Kiba heard Y/N's footsteps and frowned when he approached. "Why are you here?"
"Why the negativity, prince charming? Can't I see how hard my.. peers are training?" Y/N shot back and crossed his arms.
