"You must be lost."
Sophie whirled around, her blond hair whipping the boy in the face. "Who-what?" Then she got a closer look at the boy. He had messy blond hair that was definitely styled to look that, a wide smirk, as well as ice-blue eyes. Sophie couldn't spot his streak, but judging by how hot he looked, he was probably taken.
'Dammit,' she thought. 'Don't even know his name and I'm already falling.'
"I asked you if you were lost. No need to hit me in the face with your hair." He massaged his cheek.
Crossing her arms, Sophie fired back. "It couldn't have hurt that much. And, why are you asking if I'm lost?"
"You don't seem like the ditching type... unless you are?"
Sophie was speechless. "What? No. I guess I am lost. I had a chem accident and Mrs. Galvin sent me to the hospital wing."
The boy started doubling over with laughter. "Did you get the scarf?" was all he could manage between his giggles.
Not sure what to say, Sophie simply nodded.
The boy burst out in hysterics. "Omg. Mrs. Galvin treasures her scarf. I don't know how you evaded detention, but you have my respect!!"
"Do I want your respect?"
"Of course you do!" The boy plastered mock offence on his face. "Anyway, I'm guessing you burned yourself? Let's get you to Elwin then." He walked off.
"Should I be following you?"
"If you want to get that burn treated, you probably should."
Sophie raced to catch up with the boy's long steps.
---
"What did you do?" Elwin, the school nurse, was gently treating her burn while wearing a very quizzical expression on his face.
"Well, I-"
"Oh, boy, let me tell you. This girl, she burnt Mrs. Galvin's scarf!" The boy started doubling over with laughter once again.
Sophie rolled her eyes. "I could have said it myself, thank you very much, uh... what's your name?"
"Keefe. Keefe Sencen. Or you can call me Keefe with the best hair ever!!!!!" He ran his fingers through his hair and smirked. "You?"
"Uh... Sophie. Sophie Foster." The name rolled off her tongue. No, she didn't take her adoptive parent's surname. Foster kinda reminded Sophie of a life that she left behind. It was sad, but it helped her remember.
"Well, Foster, glad I could assist you on this trip to the healing center."
Elwin, who had finished treating Sophie's wound at this point, turned around to Keefe. "I'm guessing you want a pass?"
"Yes please."
Elwin scribbled on a piece of paper and handed it to Keefe. Turning back to Sophie, he said, "Well. You're healed. I also checked some other stuff, and I notice that you don't have a streak."
Sophie grimaced. "Yeah. Uh... I was born without one. I'm not really sure why."
"Hm... There doesn't seem to be anything wrong with you as far as I can tell... Do your parents know?"
"Yeah."
Elwin was quiet for a few seconds. "I believe you realize that having no streak means that you don't have a soulmate."
Sophie leaned back in her chair, processing the very familiar piece of knowledge. "Yeah. I know. I guess I was a little bummed about not having a soulmate, but I've gotten over it."
