Now that we were on solid, noncrowded ground, my breathing became steady again. Finn started walking and so did I. We passed many little shops which looked absolutely adorable. They were built vintage style and had tiny, golden hanging lamps from the roof shadecovers. Some windowpanes were painted glass ornamented with flowers in different colors.
"These shops are so cute," I murmured. "We don't have these in many places."
"This is considered the 'vintage corner' of Chiswick. There are lots of small shops and pubs that have existed since the 70's. Most were renovated to look newer and cleaner," Finn explained.
"Oh..." I looked in awe at the different shops, my eyes wide. I could see Finn smiling a little from my peripheral view.
We approached another cute shop which was labeled, 'Starbucks.' Finn opened the door for me, and I thanked him and walked inside. I took a good look of my surroundings. There were the wooden tables and chairs, as usual, but the walls were brick and there were long, hanging lights from the ceiling all different sizes. There were dark, maroon wood beams across the ceiling and upper walls. It looked a bit like a log cabin resort without the logs.
"In Dolton, the Starbucks shops usually look pretty plain compared to this. This is...wow..."
Finn chuckled and we stood in line to order our drinks. At first it was an awkward silence, but our turn soon came.
"Hi, welcome to Starbucks. What would you like today?" The barista spoke with a thick accent that was different from a British one, and she had orange-red hair. She looked about our age, and gave us a friendly smile. We returned one.
"I'd like a Caramel Macchiato, please."
Finn looked over at me. "What would you like, Kas?"
"I'd like a Grasshopper Frappuccino, please." I smiled. "It's always been my favorite, since I was 9. I always liked the refreshing mint taste."
Finn nodded and the girl wrote down our orders on our cup. "Your names, please?"
"The Macchiato is Finn, F-I-N-N, and the Frappuccino is Kas."
I grinned at Finn when he spelled his name. He rolled his eyes. "They always mispell my name even if it's that simple. It's always P-H-I-N, or F-I-N, or something like that."
I laughed. "That's pretty sad."
He nodded in agreement. "I'll pay, by the way. It would only be like a gentleman to do so." He smiled and I rolled my eyes. This dude is, just...
After paying, Finn turned around and started walking towards the furniture. "Shall we find a table?"
"Sure."
We walked over to an empty table with two chairs and sat down. I placed my palm on my cheek and looked around, not quite sure what to say. Finn drummed his fingers on the table, not sure what to say either. It took a good 5 minutes, I'd say, until Finn spoke up.
"So...if you don't mind, I'd like to know more about you. Tell me about yourself."
I looked up at him, and he smiled warmly.
"Alright. Um...well, as you know already, my name is Kassandra but Kas for short."
Finn nodded, and I continued. "I'm almost 18, and I'm from 'The Land of the Burgers.' " I frowned, and made finger quotes around 'land of the burgers.' "Virginia called me that. At first, I found it a bit offensive, but now I look back at it and it's a bit true. I'm a huge reader, and I love books. I had a good amount of friends in Illinois, but I had to move here....in my senior year, god..."
