Abby
A few hour went by since Chase left. I was watching tv as I waited for my transfusions to finish. I heard a knock on the door. I expected it to be Chase, but it wasn't. It was the Mathews.
"Abby!" Mrs. Mathews said as she ran inside the room and gave me a hug.
I hugged her back. Then Mr. Mathews came in. "Chase called us" he said. Of course he called them.
"Why didn't you tell us anything sweetheart?" Kathy asked me with concerned eyes.
I sighed " I recently found out. I was scared and didn't know what to do. I didn't want to burden you guys" I said not meeting their eyes.
"Oh sweetheart you could never burden us. We're family remember?" I nodded and Mrs. Mathews hugged me again.
"That's right Abby. We're family. Don't forget that. I promised your father I would always take care of you like a daughter and I'm going to keep that promise" Mr. Mathews said. Then he gave me a hug. I nodded and hugged him back.
"Where's Chase?" I asked. I was getting worried about him.
"We're not sure. He called us earlier and told us what happened. He's not in the apartment. We don't really know where he is, but I'm sure he's going to come soon." Kathy said. I nodded. "If you don't mind, we're going to speak with your doctor."
"Yeah that's fine." I didn't want to speak of the subject anymore. I felt very tired. I fell asleep while watching a movie.
While I was asleep I heard voices. "How could you do this while she's in the hospital. My god Chase i thought you were more mature than that" I heard Kathy say.
"I'm sorry mom. It's just when I found out the news... I didn't know how to deal with it." Chase said.
"She needs you Chase. Grow up and act like an adult."
"I know mom. I know." Chase said.
That's when I woke up. I looked up and saw Chase all beat up. He looked worse than me.
"Chase what happened?" I asked him.
He scratched the back of his head "I kind of got in a bar fight." He sighed.
"Can I please have a word with Chase?" I asked the Mathews. They both nodded and walked out the door.
Chase looked up at me. "Chase I'm sorry for not telling you about my condition. Like I said before. I was scared. I didn't know what to do. But I'm not scared anymore. I know your family supports me. Your parents showed me that earlier. I know this is hard on you and I don't want to force this on to you. If you want out, I get it. I understand. You didn't ask for this, so if you want to break up..."
He walked up and sat next to me "no Abigail, how could you think that? I love you. I would never leave you. Earlier I was scared. I was scared I would loose you. I immediately called my parents and they came out to see you. We all love you. I could never leave you. We are going to fight this. We're going to fight this and you're going to get better" he said with determination.
I started crying. "What if I don't get better Chase. It's not fair for you. It's not fair for any of you. You guys didn't sign up for this."
He cut me of "neither did you Abigail. I love you. My family loves you. And we are going to fight this" he said. He kissed my hand and I nodded.
Then I heard my name vein being called out. I knew that voice anywhere. "Abbs!" I heard Ashley cry. She ran into the room and came up to hug me.
"Ash what are you doing here?" I asked her. "You're supposed to be in San Francisco." I said.
She looked up at me. "What do you mean what am I doing here? Why the heck didn't you tell me. Chase called and told me!" She punched my arm. "You promised never to lie to me anymore." She said with tears in her eyes.
"I'm sorry Ash. I was scared" I starting crying again.
"Oh no don't cry Abbs! I'm sorry I forgive you!" She said hugging me. I hugged her back. "You know I love you Abbs. You're the sister I never had." She said balling her eyes out.
"I know. I love you too Ash." I couldn't stop crying either.
"Ok that's enough" Chase cut in. "Abigail needs her rest." Ashley nodded and let go of me.
I was discharged from the hospital a few hours later. The Mathews took me home.
They stayed with us a few days. Ashley has to leave the next day because of school, but she promised to come back on the weekend.
Mr. and Mrs. Mathews were the ones who stayed a few days. They accompanied me to my doctors appointment and got all the information they needed. Mr. Mathew was determined to help me find a donor.
A few weeks passed since that whole fiasco happened. The medication seemed to be working very well. I felt so much better.
The doctor said I should keep my normal routine. I just had some restrictions I needed to work with. I had to work a lot more on my higene, so did everyone around me.
Unfortunately I had to quit my job at the cafe. I was sad I wasn't able to see Caleb as much. He would visit me from time to time. I could tell Chase would get jealous, but he saw how happy I would get, and he would get over it.
I was glad I was getting some sort of normality in my life. I had to go once a week to get a transfusion and I was up to date on my medication.
Life with Chase however changed. He had taken the role of caretaker instead of boyfriend.
This frustrated me. He had enough on his plate. School was challenging enough.
So I decided it would be a good idea to surprise him.
