Chapter 39

Abby

I can't believe I saw him today. It's been almost 8 years. Damn he's always been a handsome devil. I shook my head. I needed to stop thinking about him.

I got home and Alex ran to give me a hug like he always did. "How's mommy's favorite little man doing?" I asked as I hugged him back.

"Good mommy!" He said smiling at him. He just lost his first tooth.

"How was school baby?" I asked him.

"It was good. My friend and I played a lot at recess." He said smiling at me.

"Well doesn't that sound fun" I told him. We all had dinner together then I gave him a bath, helped him with his homework and sent him to bed.

"How was your day dear?" Irene asked me.

"Horrible" I told her everything that happened today.

"Well it seems to me it's time to face your past honey." She said.

I went to bed soon after. I didn't want to face my past. I ran away from it because it was too much to handle.

The next day I had a 24 hr shift. It was going to be horrible. We would spend most of the evening/night in the ER. During the day we would do our rounds and do patient notes. Today however Dr.Rivera told me to head to the VIPS room. I was supposed to be with him, through his entire hospital visit. Shit. I had to stay in Caleb's room until tomorrow.

I got to Caleb's room and thankfully Chase wasn't there. "Hello Mister. How are you feeling today?" I asked Caleb.

"Better doctor thanks" he looked at me. "I'm sorry Abby. I know I should of told you right away. I didn't know he was going to visit me so early. I thought he was going to stop by until night time. I'm sorry Abby bear really."

"It ok Caleb. I forgive you. I haven't been the best friend either. Gosh I haven't been called Abby bear in years. I missed that."

We spent the rest of the day talking about old times and the present. I was honestly having a good time.

I thought the day was going by great but then I heard the door knob turn and Chase walked in. Oh great.

He looked at Caleb and I. "Hey man how are your feeling?" He asked him.

"Great, Abby bear has been taking great care of me." He smiled at me.

"Well how nice of her." Chase mumbled.

I got up "well if you excuse me, I'll give you guys time to talk. I'm heading to the ER, I'm sure I'm needed there. I'll come check on you later Caleb. You can call the nurse if you need anything." I told Caleb. He just nodded. He understood my situation.

"You should stay Abby." Chase said grabbing my arm. I pulled my arm away.

"No i have to work. That's what I do." I said and I walked out of the room.

As I thought the ER was complete chaos. I was there until about 6 am, that's when things calmed down.

I went to Caleb's room. It was dark. He was asleep, unfortunately when I opened the door I woke him. Along with the person sleep next to him on the couch. Chase. Damn it! I really did have the worst luck.

"Sorry to wake you Caleb, I just came to say good bye. My shift is over soon" I told him.

"Wow you've been here 24 hrs?" He said.

"Yup I have, I'll see you tomorrow. I'm pretty sure you'll be discharged tomorrow." I told him. "Sorry for waking you, bye" I said.

"Wait." That was Chase. "Let me give you a ride home" he said.

"Um no thanks my coworker gives me a ride home when I have a long shift. Thanks anyway. Bye" I said immediately walking away.

I finished some paperwork and headed outside. To my dismay I saw Chase outside. "So where's you coworker?" He asked.

Of course he caught my lie. "Um his shift got extended." I said looking away.

"Let me give you a ride." He said.

"No thanks, traffic is horrible here. I'll take the train. I'll get home much faster." I said as I started to walk away.

He grabbed my arm. "Come on Abigail" he said looking at me.

"No Chase. Not let go of me, I've had a long shift and I need to get home and rest." I told him. He let go of my arm and I walked away not looking back. I got home pretty quick. Irene had already taken Alexander to school so I took a shower and fell asleep.

I woke up around 12:30 pm. I helped Irene with the house chores and then I went to go pick up Alexander from school. I wasn't really able to do it, but you could tell he got happy when I did.

I took him to a diner down the street. He just loved the milkshakes from there. We were about to leave the diner when I heard "Abigail" shit! Only one person called me that.

"Who are you?" Alex asked Chase.

"I'm Chase, who are you buddy?"

"Im" I cut him off.

"He's Alex and we have to go." I pulled Alex by his arm and walked out of there as fast as I could.  

We got home and I helped Alex with his homework and then he went to play.

Today was a close one. Alex met his dad. I couldn't tell either of them tho. I just wanted Chase to leave so I could get back to my normal life.
