| CHAPTER SEVEN |
Affection
[unedited]For fourteen days, misery had engulfed those aboard the Dawn Treader who had been lost out at sea in a seemingly never ending storm. Thunder, lighting and continuous downpour forbad even the slightest chances of spotting land and the constant collision between the waves and the ship treacherously neglected the crew from a well needed break as they were tossed and jerked around. The sensation of smooth sailing had been long forgotten as the crew struggled to keep the ship from flooding and keeping steady.
Diana - along with many other members aboard the ship who were not gifted with the ability to be rocked to sleep during a harsh sea storm - had struggled severely to earn an appropriate amount of sleep. Not only has the ships ridged jerking and the roaring thunder constantly held her from her slumber, but Diana had unfortunately been plagued with nightmares - or at least she believed they were nightmares. Her mind had guarded her from the memories of what had haunted her dreams, leaving her to spend a majority of her time stuck in thought as she attempted to remember even the slightest details of what horrified her so much that she would wake in a cold sweat, her heart pounding against her rib cage and her hands shaking. She was lucky if she received even a few hours of sleep each night.
In a reckless and careless attempt to shield herself from an unescapable, torturous dream realm, Diana had taken it upon herself to keep awake as long as her body would allow her. She would always be the last to be excused to bed and would constantly try to keep herself busy as a diversion. As a result, she had not slept more than four hours within the past three days which modified her usual radiant features to appear somewhat sickly; dark circled bruised under her eyes and her skin paled creating a striking contrast to the usual kind smile that now seemed forced upon her lips.
Currently, Drinian, Caspian, Edmund and Diana had settled into the Captain's quarters as half the crew remained below deck in an attempt to receive some shut eye as the other half remained above, busting their bones to the limit to keep the ship as steady as possible in the eye of the storm. Drinian stood before the table at the centre of the quarters, leaning over it as he stared down at a large, unrolled map. Edmund stood close by, preventing himself from falling over from the ships severe jolting by gripping one of the wooden beams supporting the roof above them. Caspian and Diana sat beside each other on a brown leather couch seated at the back of the quarters against the window. Caspian stared out at the storm, his eyes hard as he was consumed by thought, willing himself to focus his concentration on the Captain rather than the exhausted girl beside him.
"So, we're stuck here," Drinian stated as he placed a token upon a map, marking the area. "At half rations of food and water for two more weeks maximum." he explained as he mirrored Edmund's position, grabbing ahold of one of the beams upon the roof to steady himself before continuing, "This is your last chance to turn back your Majesty. There's no guarantee we'll spot the blue star anytime soon. Not in this storm. Needle in a haystack trying to find this Ramandu place. We could sail right past it if not the edge of the world."
