7 ~

Kikyo didn't know when it went all wrong.

When the buildings and forests caught fire. When the bodies of shinobi started falling. When chaos ensued.

For almost all of Konoha it was just a normal day. Missions were handed out, shops opened up for business, shinobi came home from missions and made their way to the Hokage Tower to turn in missions reports. Children went to the academy or followed their parents throughout the day. Civilians went to work or went about their day however they pleased.

Things were running smoothly when Kushina's water broke, even afterwards things were running smoothly. For the time being. Kikyo was one of the select few that were to be present for the birth of Minato and Kushina's child. Two nurses, Kikyo, Minato and Kushina were in an underground cave on the outskirts of the village. The cave was illuminated by candles and Kushina lay on what seemed like a stone altar surrounded by seals as she got ready to give birth. They all knew the seal of the Nine Tailed Fox was weakened during childbirth and Minato made sure to do everything in his power to keep the seal intact.

Everything fell into chaos shortly after their blonde haired baby boy was born.

One moment Kikyo was assisting the nurses clean up and the next she was being held by her throat up against the wall and the nurses bodies were dead on the ground. A man wearing all black, save for the orange and black mask on his face held her by her throat. There was no real dangerous pressure being put on her, but enough that he could close her airways if she tried to fight. Kikyo tried her best to steady her breathing and not cause a panic attack when Kushina and Minato needed her.

"Let her go. Now."

The man holding her throat only laughed at Minato's demand. Kikyo placed her hands on the arm that was holding her and concentrated on the chakra flowing through the perpetrators body only for her eyes to widen. It couldn't be, it was distorted beneath the signature but it was there, how could - ?

The visible eye glared at her and the man tightened his hold on her throat before leaning in to her ear, "If I were you, I'd keep my mouth shut."

A sharp pain erupted through her head and her vision went white, he had struck Kikyo in the head hard enough to distort her. She could feel herself falling and the room spinning as her body crumbled to the ground; she could barely make out the masked an grabbing the baby and running with Minato hot on his tail. Kikyo could see Kushina laying on the ground almost in a daze, she knew she needed to tend to Kushina immediately in case there was something wrong. As she struggled to get on her hands and knees to at least crawl over to the red head, Kikyo's brain still couldn't wrap itself around the masked man. She KNEW that chakra, she had years to familiarize herself with it. Why he was playing dead... why he was distorting his chakra to be that of another was beyond her. Why didn't he come home and what happened to him?!

"Kushina, I need you to... I need you to try and turn over onto your side." Kikyo managed to say as she neared the new mother.

The pain in Kikyo's body was slowly going away, whatever part of her brain that was struck really affected her and she knew she would need to get looked at by a medic ninja as soon as possible. There was only so much she could do medically with her chakra and nature chakra without proper training in the medical arts. Kikyo helped Kushina get onto her side before resting both a hand on both her stomach and back and letting her chakra feel out for anything. The bright orange that was of the Nine-Tailed Fox that Kikyo had grown familiar with sensing was now gone and Kushina's was weak, the seal breaking must've sucked most of her chakra out.

"Minato will be back soon, okay? Please don't worry, he's going to get the baby and then come get you and then you'll all be safe, okay? Kushina, please you have to try to stay awake just a little bit longer."

Kushina nodded weakly and squeezed Kikyo's hand weakly. The sudden appearance of chakra made Kikyo tense but instantly relax as the familiar warmth of it swamped over her.

"How is she?"

Kikyo looked up at Minato and nodded, "Weak, but she's okay. And the baby?"

"Safe. Hold onto me?"

Kikyo only shook her head, "Get Kushina to safety, I'll be okay."

Minato picked up Kushina into his arms and gave Kikyo one last glance before disappearing in the blink of an eye. Kikyo willed herself to stand and assess the room, the two nurses - one of which was the Third Hokage's wife - lay dead on the floor. She went over to where her bag lay against a wall and pulled out a scroll before surging chakra into it, making the scroll almost as big as she was. Kikyo unrolled the scroll and carefully began making two separate seals to hold their bodies in, it took ten minutes to complete the seals but it was ten well worth it minutes if it meant these two women could get a proper burial when all this was over. Carefully, Kikyo dragged the women onto their respective seals before letting her chakra pour into them, the women disappearing in a puff of smoke and the scroll rolling closed and shrinking to it's normal size once again. She put the scroll in her bag and placed her bag onto her back, she needed to get out of there and to her home quickly.

Outside in the village was fairing no better than she was. She could see the Nine-Tailed Fox roaring loudly, his tails moving wildly behind him as he was attacked left and right. But all Kikyo could do was run away from him and towards her home. Get the bag home and join the fight. That was her goal. And she would fight for her village until the fox was dead or gone.

Of course she was too late. She always was. Her team died in front of her eyes. She watched her parents die. She watched Obito get crushed by that damned boulder. And here she was, late and unable to do anything about the death of the two people she considered to be her family. Kikyo felt her heart breaking as she ran towards them, ignoring the death god that hovered over them and letting them fall on top of her as the fox disappeared.

"Naruto... his name is Naruto... Kikyo..." Kushina was struggling to speak, "I leave him in your hands, take care of our son..."

All Kikyo could do was cry loudly, holding the two people she considered her family as the world around her seemed to freeze. She barely registered the Third Hokage appearing with aid, she barely registered Kushina and Minato talking with their lasts breath. The Shinigami stood behind them and he and Kikyo stared into one another's eyes. He said nothing, knowing nothing needed to be said. Kikyo understood perfectly. His fate and hers were tied forever, she would always see him, she would always see those closest to her die whether it be through a vision or in front of her eyes. That was her role as the last surviving member of the Ito clan, a clan of death. Everyone around her dies.
