The sound of the ball smashing harshly against the polished floor echoed through the gym, everyone froze in their spots watching it bounce a few more times.
"Woaahh!! Katsumi-chan that was amazing!" The orange haired first year beamed.
Kohana laughed at Hinata's reaction. They all knew it wasn't the first time he saw her serve and yet the awe shown in his face was still tainted with suprise.
"Alright!!! No touch service ace..!!"
Reiko had her mouth agape even as she shot Katsumi a glare from the other side of the net.
Akari was still looking at where the ball had touched the floor. Slowly, a small smile made it's way into her lips. Misaki who had seen this, only shook her head knowing that the girl had been waiting for this moment ever since.
"If I didn't know you I'd assume that was a fluke since the aim was barely in. But, you're the Katsumi... and underestimating you would be a huge mistake. Now.. again." Akari said, a hungry look on her face.
And so Katsumi did. She served again, and again, and again and it went like that. It was touched a few times but they weren't able to properly recieve it. Until the eighth serve where Akari was finally able to send the ball up, meaning someone else would spike. Misaki being the setter in the three, Katsumi already predicted that Reiko being Reiko, would immediately hit, frustrated that they were behind several points, still not being able to score.
She and Michimiya jumped at her call, but the attack got past her senpai's block. Kohana easily recieved the ball and sent it towards Katsumi who set it to Michimiya making sure the block couldn't react fast enough.
They scored again.
.
The boys watch in astonishment as the girl's game continued. It was more fascinating than they thought. These girls were no push over.
Everyone was aware it wasn't just some match. It meant so much to their manager to play against the people she used to play with. Of course they were also rooting for her team.
Anyone who would watch could see the burning passion and determination to win from the players. Both teams moved with such precision and sync that it looked like the match was rehearsed.
One had the upperhand though, and it was the team with two sisters who grew up playing together and their experienced senpai. Katsumi and Kohana didn't need signals, or calls, they just played. Kohana could actually spike really good, but she only attacked when Katsumi was the one setting the ball. She was still the main player in their defense while Katsumi was the one who scored the most.
"I can see how the other team tense up when Katsumi is serving. If I was them I'd also put my guard up. Her serve is.. frightening." Sugawara said as he scratched the back of his head.
"I agree. It's like Oikawa's serve, but Katsumi's a girl and her control over the ball is so precise she could decide where the ball would land." The male captain said.
"Those serves are like spikes. Actually, they are spikes. And she also does jump float flawlessly too." Yamaguchi added.
The rest of the boys could only agree as they watch the girls, specifically a dangerous looking blue haired player. Katsumi's usual gentle smile cannot be seen as her expression was dark and focused as she kept an eye on the ball.
'Now!' Katsumi thought as she jumped up to block an incoming spike.
The ball went through the tip of her finger tips before landing behind her.
"She switched into a straight..!!"
Akari smirked while Katsumi rolled her eyes. She checked her hands before clenching it and dropping it to her side.
"No matter how perfect everyone says you are, there's still room for improvement so don't get cocky. You're still lousy at blocking, clearly not exceeding the standard for Japan's Kashizu."
Reiko went to high five Akari while Katsumi just walked away. It was true. Her spikes, recieves, tosses and serves are considered outstanding but she was never really good at blocking. Her blocks were average, or like Akari said, 'lousy'. There was no room for average when you're supposed to be the best. Or so that's what their old coach used to say.
Reiko on the other hand, was their best blocker. She didn't look the part but she was an important part of the team. Her blocks were incredible, the only problem was she's gullible and easily confused. This was the only thing she could hold against Katsumi back in Junior high.
Misaki, now that's just the girl simply standing in her position, eyes on the ball. Katsumi could tell she was better now than the last time they played. Misaki was smart, calm and collected. She wasn't flashy like the rest, sometimes the people forget her presence making her dumps go through easily. You'd be a fool if you said she isn't skilled though.
"One touch..!" Michimiya exclaimed as she turned to where the ball was headed to. Akari was undeniably a strong spiker as well. But she didn't really get recognized when everyone's attention was on Katsumi. Somehow this was an asset to the team as the opponents don't always mark her. But this took it's toll on the girl even when she was made captain, she was never really number one.
Even with the touch, the ball's accuracy did not falter as it sped towards the floor. Just as everyone thought the other team had scored, Kohana swiftly slipped her small body and made an underhand recieve, taking them by suprise.
"That recieve..! She also manage to execute it perfectly." Asahi said as the male libero beside him gawked.
"Kohana's recieves always aim for perfection.." They turned their heads towards Kiyoko who soon noticed their gaze on her because of her statement.
"Well you see.. with Katsumi's ambition and constant need to improve, Kohana believes one day she'll be unstoppable.. and I think so too. She made it her goal to be the one who can recieve Katsumi's future serves and spikes, not that she's planning to go against her." She finished, her eyes not leaving her younger siblings darting around the court."Kohana-chan is so cool!"
"That's quite a challenge, eh?"
"I'll teach her how to do my rolling thunder then!!"
.
"Nice receive Hana." Katsumi quickly patted her sister's head before returning to her position.
Kohana glanced towards the other side of the net and her gaze was met with a frowning Reiko. The silver haired girl cringed as she could easily see up close how Reiko's make up was messed up with sweat. Everything just looks... revolting.
Reiko's frown instantly turned into a smirk making Kohana look at her weirdly and turning around.
"Kohana, how does it feel to actually be able to play with by your sister's side this time?
I mean.. since you didn't get the chance to do so before." Reiko giggled in a gross manner.
She couldn't see it, but Kohana was gritting her teeth while glaring at emptiness before she composed herself.
Surprising Reiko, Kohana had a grin on her face as she turned around looked up at her.
"It's amazing, It's amazing how she'll easily earn points like how we're winning against you now." She said, gesturing to the score board.
Making the blonde scowl.
"Then I guess you haven't realized that you're just playing in her shadow then."
"Are you kidding? Being in her shadow is an honor itself. I don't know why you guys decided to be commoners when you could have been serving along side the queen!" Kohana gave her one last mocking grin before walking away, only to earn a smack at the back of her head by 'the queen' herself.
"Sorry your highness!" Kohana said jokingly.
"Oh shut up." Katsumi said, her gaze softening slightly before returning to the match.
"We're still not done."
