BELLE BECOMES BLUE

BELLE HAD TRIED to talk to Connor and Travis the next morning. It didn't work. The two must've been ashamed or something, because every time she tried to approach them, they would avoid all eye contact and walk off in the other direction. All she wanted to do was sit down and have a conversation. Travis' words had really gotten her to think. Had she really been ignoring the two of them? If she had, that wasn't her intention. She had just been so distracted with worry ever since the Battle of the Labyrinth.

It was her turn to do Cabin inspections that day. She really didn't mind it, but since Percy's chore was to sort through reports for Chiron, they decided to do their jobs together so it wouldn't be so horrible. Annabeth tagged along to help them both. After all, an extra set of hands would help out a lot.

They started at the Poseidon Cabin, the first one on the list since nobody stayed in the Zeus and Hera Cabins. It was just Percy in his Cabin, but it still was a little messy. Clothes were strewn across the floor. All he had done was make his bunk bed and straighten the Minotaur horn on his wall. Percy said that he deserved a four out of five.

Annabeth scoffed. "You're being generous."

Belle snickered and picked up a pair of his running shorts with the end of her pencil, holding it up to his face. "Yeah, look at these, Perce. Is this a part of your decor?"

Percy snatched them away, making Belle laugh harder. "All right, Beauty. Give me a break. Tyson isn't here to clean up after me this summer."

"I'm giving you a three out of five." Belle looked up from her scroll to see that Percy was giving her those big green eyes that looked like ones of a baby seal, and just like every time, it made her weak to her knees. "No, Percy, do not give me that look. I'm not changing it."

He jutted his bottom lip out. "Please?"

For a moment, she almost fell for it. But she knew what Percy was doing, and she wouldn't let him win. At least . . . not this time.

She poked his cheek with her pencil eraser. "No. Come on, let's keep going."

Annabeth and Percy tried to skim through Chiron's stack of reports as they walked. They had told Belle that there were messages from Demigods, nature spirits, and Satyrs around the country who were writing about the latest monster activity. She was glad that she had Cabin inspection so that she didn't have to read through all the depressing notes.
