Chapter 7: Two Steps Forward, Two Steps Back

(3rd POV)

It was the morning with almost everyone at the campsite in their sleeping bags except for Qrow who fell asleep. Almost everyone fell asleep easily considering they were exhausted from traveling and their earlier battle with Tyrian. Well everyone except for Alex, who cried herself to sleep after returning nearly after an hour that Ruby returned.

Ren was the first one up so he sat up in his sleeping bag. "We should probably get moving." Ren said. This woke Jaune up making the blond teammate sit up. "Yeah, yeah." Jaune said. The girls then woke up so everyone got out of their sleeping bags.

Alex got out of her bed and folded up her bed feeling like someone had their eyes on her, she looked to see Ruby with her eyes on her. Once Ruby noticed Alex saw her she looked away and folded up her bed opting Alex to look away and do the same. Once she looked away Ruby looked back at Alex frowning, questioning if what she did last night really justified.

As she was thinking about her previous events from last night she then heard her uncle violently starting to cough, it getting worse with each cough. Ruby then runs over to her uncle with others soon following, worried for the old man's health.

Qrow holds the scar that was covered with nanobots to stop the bleeding with one hand while using the other hand to cover his mouth when he coughs. Qrow pulls his hand away with a groan, and the whole palm, including up over the wrist and his fingers, is covered in the purple stain.

Ruby's eyes grow wide, and she gasps while Qrow looks at his hand. "Well... That's unfortunate." Qrow said looking up to his niece. Alex then pressed the core for the nanobots on her chest as they spread to her left arm. The brains of the group then lifted Qrow's left hand as he fell asleep. He then raised her free hand above the palm of Qrow's hand and began to scan the blood.

Once the scan was done she put Qrow's hand and lifted her right arm as a hologram emerged from it showing the structure of the blood and the poisoned blood. Alex then begins to frown seeing how fast the poison seemed to be affecting the blood cells. "This is way worse than I thought. Why didn't I scan the wound?" Alex asked herself as she began to mess with the hologram with her right hand.

After hearing this the others turn to the very still Qrow. "Why is it so bad, I thought the nanobots are supposed to help with wounds." Jaune said, turning back to Alex. Alex then turned away from the hologram to glare at Jaune. "Hey, it heals wounds, it isn't some magical cure that treats all diseases and ailments." Alex said, looking back at her left arm. "Well what's happening?" Ren asked.

The hologram then altered to bring the two blood samples together making one completely contaminated blood sample. The image then zoomed out to show the infected blood sample connected to more blood samples some more healthy than the others. "Well it looks like Tyrian's poison is moving through Qrow's system contaminating the blood which is later poisoning his heart when the affected blood moves through it. If he isn't cured soon his heart will stop working." Alex said not exactly uplifting everyone's spirit.

Ruby looks at Qrow worried what will happen to him, scared of him actually dying. "How long has he got?" Ruby asked, still looking at her uncle. Alex then turned off the hologram and made the nanobots move to the core with a thought as she stood up. "Estimated assumption 12 hours at least." Alex said.

Ruby then turns to Alex and stands up as the others help lift Qrow off the ground. "Well can we cure him?" Ruby asked. "It is possible, but in order to make an effective cure I need some penicillin and we don't have any." Alex said. "Well if we got some could you still make it?" Ruby asked as her heart started beating faster in fear of her uncle's health. "Yeah, which means we need to get penicillin soon." Alex said, making Ruby faintly smile, forgetting she wasn't trying to focus on Alex.
