Chapter 21
The Librarians
Lysandra
We pushed open the large doors and entered the vast tower to see bookcase after bookcase that stretched unnaturally high. The floor was stone, with a red rug stretching in a variety of directions. There was a spiral stone staircase to our left, with faint light filtering down from the upper level.
"I know what I said, Aurora!" A voice came from the stairs.
"Then why are you trying to change it now, Elizabeth?" Came another voice. We glanced in the direction of the voices and noticed two women elegantly descending the stairs. "You always say that we have to help people no matter the cost!"
"Not when the cost is time! Time is balance, without balance, we lose ourselves. We can't just help everyone all the time." Elizabeth sighed."Even to save a world?" Aurora countered, stubbornly.
"Especially then, Aurora! Timelines shouldn't be tampered with! This is one of the first things we are taught!" As they continued to squabble, I noticed that the women were quite different than anything I had ever seen. Elizabeth had long, white-grey hair that was tied up in different spots by twine. She wore a long black dress that flowed gracefully behind her. She was short in stature, but she was obviously the one in charge. A small clip-clop came from her feet, and I noticed that where she gathered her skirts, her legs resembled that of a horse.
Aurora, on the other hand, was much more lanky than Elizabeth. She had much shorter hair, that was chopped just below her jawline and was in much more disarray than Elizabeth's. She wore a loose linen shirt, tightened around her torso by a black corset and trousers that were mismatched on each leg. One was stark red, the other a black and white striped. A tail swished behind her and her ears were cat-like. She wore an assortment of jewelry and a feathered hat on her head.
The two women continued their argument and descended the stairs until they stood in front of us. Elizabeth had striking gold eyes, and Aurora's were a cat-like green. When she smiled at us, her canines were fanged.
"Hello there!" Aurora grinned widely.
"Please excuse her. She's incompetent." Elizabeth scowled at Aurora.
"Um, may I ask what you are discussing?" I asked genuinely confused.
"Aurora tampered with the timeline to save this particular type of lilies." Elizabeth said with disdain.
"Elizabeth those moon lilies have medicinal properties and can save lives!" Aurora stomped her foot in frustration.
"IF--and this is a big IF--the people figure out that it can be used for medicine. And we all know why you did this. You love moon lilies and didn't want them to go extinct. Even though they can come back later." We stared at the two, they were equally fierce and stubborn.
"Um, right, okay. Well we are here because--" I started.
"We know WHY you are here, Lysandra." Both of them said without turning to us. "We know why you are all here." I looked at Caspian who shrugged.
"We just need some answers." I started again. "You see, the orchard of Eodanor, and the village of Aglirim are--"
"Victims of Parf Edhellen's power." Elizabeth groaned. "Yes, yes, we know all this."
"How?" Illine pitched in, eyes wide.
"I cannot tell everything that we know. 'For when that day comes we must ride toward the sun and burn.'"
