Chapter twenty four

After school I get ready to leave as fast as I could. Putting on my coat and hat. Once I was ready, I walk out of the school house with Jane. Billy was waiting for us.
"You don't mind me walking with you girls" he asked. "If not I can rush ahead"
I look at Jane and pout. She sighs "ugh, fine" she said.
"Thanks Jane!" I giggle and we both walk down the steps.
Billy walks on one side and Jane walks on the other. Me and Jane walks arm in arm and me and Billy just walk side by side. Me and Jane never walked arm in arm before. She must have wanted Billy to know that I was her best friend. The event from the day goes through my head and I can't help but smile. The part where he made me feel uncomfortable was quickly replaced with me punching him and him lying about it. I even giggle out loud. They both look at me.
"Ok what happened and why are you laughing this time?" Jane asked.
"You guys won't believe me" I say.
"Come on Jess. You where smiling at lunch today over something and know you are giggling. What are you thinking about?" Jane begged.
"Oh just that I punched Chris in the face" I say giggling again.
Billy raised his eyebrows at me.
"You did not!" Jane said.
"See?! I told you. And yeah I did"
"He said he fell" Billy said.
"That's what he wants you to think" my face goes from a smile to a worried face. I was scared what would happen when I told Billy. "Billy if I tell you what happened, you promise you won't get angry?" I ask looking at him.
"I can't promise anything." He mumbled.
"Billy Andrews" I say.
"Fine I promise" he said.
"Alright so" I start. "Today when I was getting the milk from the snow, Chris decided to talk to me. He said 'Hey Brown eyes' which is a stupid pick up line if you ask me. But he got in my way and wouldn't move. When I walked past him, he grabbed my skirt. I just instinctively turned around and punched him" I say. I could still feel it in my knuckles.
Both Billy and Jane start laughing.
"Oddly enough I believe you" Jane smiled.
"But why would he lie? He could have gotten you in serious trouble" Billy said.
"He must have thought it was less embarrassing to say he fell, than saying I punched him" I giggle. "What a wimp"
"I'm proud of you" Billy said and kisses my cheek.
"Guys! I'm right here!" Jane said.
"Sorry Jane" I giggle.

We arrive at my place. I walk up the steps to the front door.
"I'll be back" I say.
"You'll be back?" Billy asked
"Don't you remember what I told you? Jessie is sleeping over tonight. If her mother lets her. So we wait until she comes with her stuff" she explained.
"Oh....yeah" Billy said.
I giggle and walk inside. I wipe my feet and head to the kitchen.
"Mother?" I ask.
"Yes honey? Why are you still in your coat?" She asked.
"Well Jane's mother invited me over for the night with Jane" I said. "May I go?"
"A sleep over?" She asked.
"Yeah! I promise I'll be good and I'll be back tomorrow when you want me to be. We won't do anything we shouldn't and we will go to bed"
"I suppose it's ok" she said
"Yes!" I hug her. "Thanks mama!" I pull away and rush to my room to pack a bag quickly. I packed everything I needed and rushed downstairs with the bag in hand.
"You have everything you need?" My mother rushed to me.
"Yes I do" I say.
"Alright" she sighs. "Have fun and make sure to thank her before you walk home tomorrow"
"I will" we hug and she kisses my head.
I leave the house and see Billy and Jane waiting.
"Yes?" She asked.
"Yes!" I smile.
She giggled and we both rush to her house.
"Girls!" Billy calls out. "Wait!" He runs after us.
We where so excited we left Billy behind. We both giggle as we rush away. The path to the Andrews was a path I was very used to. So it was like second nature to walk to the Andrews house. Once we arrived I let Jane and Billy in before me. I walk in after and set down my bag. Mrs.Andrews walks to us.
"Your mother said yes I'm guessing" she said to me.
I nodded "Yes! I am very grateful for you letting me spend the night with Jane" I smile.
"Of course Jessie! Jane has been asking nonstop and she was very happy when I said yes"
I smile.
"Alright. You two do as you wish, dinner should be ready soon" she smiled and walks off.
Me and Jane rush to her room, my bag in my hand. Once we get in her room, I set my bag down and we sit on her bed.
"What first?" She asked.
"Well, do you have homework?"
"No I did it all" Jane said.
"Good" I smile and get up. "What if we pretend we are princesses?"
"Yes!"

Soon dinner was ready and we both walk down to the dining room. I take a seat next to Jane and across from Billy. Their mother and father at the heads of the table, and Prissy next to her brother. We say grace and began to eat. Mrs.Andrews asked me a few questions about myself and I answer them. She asked what I liked to do for fun, what's my best subject and so on. Basic questions to get to know me. As we all talked, something rubs against my foot under the table. I look up across from me and Billy makes eye contact with me. He was rubbing his foot against mine. I guess it was his way of flirting discreetly. I kept from giggling and blushing as I spoke to his mother. He was trying to make me break but I wouldn't let him. I was tempted to move my feet away but I liked the subtle intimacy. Especially since I didn't know who knew in his family besides Jane. I thought Prissy didn't know since I told Jane we where keeping it a secret but I didn't want to assume. Billy kept rubbing slowly which made me happy. Once dinner was done, me and Jane rush to wash up for bed. Jane's bed was large enough to fit us both so I didn't need to sleep on a cot or in another room. Once I was ready for bed, I leave the bathroom and walk to Jane's room. I pass Billy's room. I poke my head in and smile. He was in his pajamas and walking to his bed. He climbs in and I knock.
"Come in" he says not looking up.
I walk inside and to his bed. "I've come to tuck you in" I chuckled.
Billy looks up at me and smiled at me. He gets under his covers and I sit on the bed next to him. I put my hand on his forehead and slowly smooth back his hair as I look down at him smiling. He smiles up at me. I lean over and kiss his forehead.
"Goodnight" I say.
"Goodnight Jessie" he said.
I get up from the bed and leave the room. I head to Jane's room and walk in. We both go to her bed and climb in. Once we both lay down we begin to talk quietly.
"Oh guess what happened during dinner?" I ask.
"What?" She looks at me intrigued.
"Billy was playing footsie with me under the table" I giggle.
She gasped "No!"
"Shhhh!" I giggle. "Yeah he did"
"So scandalous" Jane jokes. She paused for a second before she looks at me. "Can I ask something?"
"Anything"
She adjusted so she was in on her right side and I adjust so I was facing her on her left side. "Are you happy with Billy?" She asked. "I know it's only been a day or two. But are you happy?"
I think for a second before responding. "I mean I was happy before I was with him. Being friends with you, Diana, Anne and Ruby" I say. "Me and billy had a good friendship before we confessed. But yeah. I am happy" I smile.
"Good" she smiled. "I only want you to be happy"
