As soon as we got back, Zayn and I had to part ways. I walked in the direction of a certain someone’s office feeling like a kid who was about to confront her parents about something she had done.
I just really hope that that one mistake hadn’t cost me my job. The first and probably last perfect job I’ll ever have.
I rounded the corner and knocked on his door, waiting for his approval to walk inside. I heard a faint “come in” and made my way inside. He was behind his desk, his eyes glued to his computer.
“You wanted to see me, Paul?” I asked, not daring to walk further into his office.
His eyes stayed glued to his computer but he motioned for me to take a seat in one of the chairs in front of his desk. I did as he instructed and sat in one of the chairs.
Silence filled the room for a few minutes as he typed away on his computer acting like I wasn’t even there.
“Is Zayn coming?” He looked up at me and asked.
I shook my head. “No, he was called for rehearsal.”
“I can only imagine. The boys have been waiting for half an hour.” He pointed out.
I pressed my lips together, guilt eating me inside and tucked a strand of hair behind my ear. “About that—”
“I don’t want to hear it, Hayden.” He crossed his arms over his desk and said very sternly. “I hired you as their publicist because I believed that you would conduct yourself in a serious manner. Don’t make me regret my decision.”
This definitely wasn’t the cool and fun Paul I had met a few days ago. He wasn’t my friend at this moment but my boss and I completely understood; I had let him down. He had trusted me and not even a few days later, I had proven him wrong.
“I understand and I apologize for what I did. It won’t happen again.”
“I really hope it doesn’t because I like you Hayden. It’s nothing personal; I just look out for my boys.” He explained, his softer side making an appearance again.
“I completely understand and I never meant for today to happen.”
“I appreciate your apologies. You may go now, I have a lot of work to get back to and I presume you do, too.” He raised his brows my way and I nodded, getting up from my seat. “Can you tell Zayn to come see me after rehearsals?”
I nodded. “I take full responsibility for what happened today. I shouldn’t have let things get that far. I’m the only one to blame.”
I didn’t want Zayn getting in trouble because of my stupidity. Yes, he was the one who came up with the idea but I knew what was on the line and still accepted.
“I know my boys, Hayden.” He smirked. “Just send him here.”
I nodded again and extended my hand out for a shake. “Thanks again.”
I made my way out of his office and into the long hall. After passing a few doors and lounges, I got to the rehearsal door. The plan was to go in there, help the guys out if needed, work and ignore Zayn. It would be hard to do but crucial if I wanted to keep my job.
I didn’t miss Zayn’s stare on me as soon as I entered the room, but I kept a straight face and walked at the back of the room, sitting behind my desk. I dropped my purse on the floor beside me and took out my agenda, deciding to sort through it first.
I was checking up on the guys here and there to make sure they were doing a good job and weren’t goofing off. Everything seemed to be working perfectly until I realized something was missing.
