I nodded my head in agreement, unsure of what else to do or say.
"Tomorrow night, Halloween. We'll kill someone."
A tear ran down my face. I couldn't even imagine killing someone. I've never harmed anyone before, why would I start now?
When Dandy noticed my tears he wiped my eye with his shirtsleeve, causing me to smile, and do my best to refrain from crying.
"Oh no darling. Please don't cry. Please. I love you so much. I only want to see you happy." He held me tightly, my head resting on his shoulder.
"I love you too, and I want to make you happy, but I just don't know if I can do this."
"Listen, I was scared, my mind was everywhere, all at once. I was afraid that he would pull out a gun before I built up the courage to shoot, I was afraid that I would get caught, I was afraid I wouldn't be able to kill him, I was afraid that you wouldn't love me anymore."
"I'll always love you, even when I'm afraid of you, I still love you."
"That's just it! I don't want you to be afraid of me!"
"I'm sorry, I just-"
"This is just another reason you need to help me kill someone. You're afraid of me because I'm a murderer, right?"
"Well, yeah." I said without mentioning that the murder was only a small part of my fear.
"If you were a murderer too, you'd have no reason to fear me! That's why we have to do it!"
"Okay. I'll do it." I said hesitantly.
"Really?!" He jumped out from under the blankets and on to his feet. "You really will?!"
He was jumping around like a child, so excited. I loved him so much when he was like this, even if it was because of murder.
"Wonderful! Tomorrow night we kill. Until then, we can just have fun!"
He took my hand and led me to the back yard. There was a beautiful garden, and in the furthest corner, an old swing set.
"Come on!" We raced to the swings like little kids. I sat on a red swing, and Dandy sat on a blue one. I began to swing high, laughing the whole time. I looked over, to see that Dandy was barely off the ground.
"What's wrong? Can't you swing?" I said jokingly.
"Honestly, no."
"How do you not know how to swing?!" I was surprised, he was in his twenties and never learned to swing by himself.
"I never had any friends to teach me, and mother would never help me to do anything. I just never learned."
"It's like this!"
I began swinging to show him.
"When you go forward, straighten your legs, when you get to the highest point, bend your knees to go back!"
He tried, and after a short time he was swinging as high as I was.
When we were swinging perfectly in sync. He reached out to touch my fingers tips. We held hands until we lost timing and were separated.
"No! Don't leave me!" He shouted dramatically.
I jumped off the swing, with him quickly following. "Come on, lets go back inside."
As we came up to the big fountain in the middle of the garden. He cupped his hands and threw some cold water at me, giggling. I immediately threw some back at him.
"Oh, it's on now!" He ran up to me, picking me up bridal style, and throwing me right into the fountain. To his surprise, I held onto his sleeve, pulling him in too.
We continued splashing, and trying to get each other under water. Just then, the sprinklers turned on.
"We're both already soaked, may as well!" He took my hand as we ran and skipped through the sprinklers, laughing the whole time. I knew he had never been able to just have fun with someone who cared about him, I was glad I could be there for him, and I was glad I could love him.
