No Hinduism in no way supports the practice of sati in Indian society. It is not written anywhere that after the death of the husband, his wife has to be consumed by sitting on his burning pyre. The four Vedas of Hinduism- Rig Veda, Yajurveda, Sama Veda and Atharva Veda, none of these four Vedas includes interpretations like burning a woman.
. Although this practice is now discontinued, in this practice the surviving widow wife was burnt alive on the dead husband's funeral pyre by her will. At the time of her husband's funeral, the widowed woman herself jumped into her burning pyre and committed self-immolation.
Ancient references
This tradition got its name from the name of Goddess Sati, who is also known as Dakshayani. According to the Hindu religious texts, Goddess Sati had taken self-immolation by jumping in the fire of yajna by her father Daksha, distressed by her husband Mahadev's disdain.
