more in depth trigger warning: gun go pew pew

jack and jonah avery were married for almost two years before they decided they wanted children. little did they know, their difference in opinions would affect this lovely marriage.

"jack, you need to understand that charles is a good kid and needs a real home to prepare for college."

"and i'm trying to explain to you that we shouldn't settle for a used kid!"

jonah wanted to adopt one of his students that were in the system but jack wanted a baby, not a teenager. (A/N: most people don't get this but you can adopt a child before they're born without being a donor. example: two men can adopt a pregnant woman's child without being the father of the child.)

"in the nicest way possible, we are going to adopt charles and you will treat him will the utmost respect.", jonah said.

the debate was over. the older of the couple finalized it that same night. he appreciated jack's opinion but it was important to him to follow his morals and not jack's.

the next day, charles stayed after class to go home with his teacher. he didn't mind, jonah was already an adult he was really close to. if he wanted to be adopted by anyone, it'd be him.

"can i take your bag?", jonah asked, on the way to his car.

"can i have it back?"

"duh. i'm just gonna take it to the car for you."

"i'm good."

the car ride, luckily, wasn't awkward with both of their amazing music tastes and conversation skills. there wasn't a moment of silence.

"mr. marais, is your wife as nice as you? can't imagine so."

"charlie, i don't have a wife, remember? i have a husband but no, he's not as cuddly as me."

"forgot you were gay. what's it like?", charlie asked, seeming genuinely curious.

"what do you mean?"

"liking dudes. i mean, no girls?"

"i'm pansexual, so no. but i'm happily married.", jonah said, taking one hand of the wheel to show him the ring.

"that's a cool ring, mr. marais. must be expensive. definitely not on a teacher's salary."

"i actually get paid much better than you'd think but my husband works for a big company."

"hmmm. wait. do i call your husband mr. marais, too?"

"that's a good question. you could just call us by our first names or you could use his maiden name, avery."

"mr. marais and mr. avery. that's pretty cool."

"okay, we're here.", jonah said, turning into his driveway.

a standard two story house, two bedrooms, two bathrooms, and an office. charlie followed jonah up the stairs and into their old guest room.

"well this is it. sorry it's kind of plain but we thought you'd enjoy decorating it yourself."

"yeah, this is really awesome, mr. marais."

"i'll give you some time alone, i know this is a lot. just finish up your homework, maybe unpack, and get ready for dinner. we'll be going out with jack."

"jack?"

"oh, um, mr. avery."

"ok, got it."

after a few hours of grading papers, jack came home. it seemed like he had a long day so jonah was sure that charlie would make it better.
