I would classify myself as a baby witch, and I have been for many years now. Witchcraft has a lot of information to dive into and can be overwhelming at times. Taking your time to develop your own practice is very important. Witchcraft is extremely personal to the individual, and anything can be adapted to fit you.
Being in the broom closet won't hinder your practice, as witchcraft is extremely accessible. Witches in the past used what they had at home for their practice, and we can do the same. Going out and buying all these expensive tools is nice but it isn't necessary.
The first biggest step is asking yourself why you are interested in witchcraft. What do you hope to gain from it? Understanding your intentions is important because the intention is the driving force. Intention is infused in spells, charms, and glamors.
