Bisexuality is Attraction to All Genders
What's disappointing is the lack of knowledge on where the biangles originated from. I could find no sources on when or by whom it was created. However, their meanings are clear if you know anything about homosexual Nazi symbols. The pink triangle of Nazi Germany represented homosexuality, or more accurately in the modern day same/similar gender attraction (SGA), while the blue triangle represents heterosexuality, or opposite/other gender attraction (OGA). The purple represents the mix of same and opposite gender attractions to make bisexuality. Below is the bisexual flag. It was created by Michael Page in 1998 who was inspired by the biangles' colors. "How does this relate to the post subject?" you may be wondering.
Although I rephrased it for the way it would be used today, the homo- and heterosexual meanings are important for two reasons. For one, it debunks the idea that bisexuality covers any two [or more] genders even if you believe in infinite genders. Sexual identities refer to attraction to those who you perceive as a sex that you're attracted to. To be bisexual, you must have the potential to be attracted to people who appear either male or female. The prefix for bisexual means "two" but it does not mean two genders. It does not mean that you can be attracted to "only women and demigirls" and claim to be bisexual. The "bi" refers to the two [both] sexes.
The next lie is that bisexuality means attracted to only the binary genders. There's a huge issue with this that so many people—even people I would normally agree with on this subject—neglect to think about. Whether person A is a woman or an enby, if they can be perceived as a woman and Person B is attracted to women but does not know A's gender, then B has the potential to be attracted to A. Nonbinary is not correspondent to a sex—it has no physical traits associated with it that could make someone recognize another as nonbinary. Some enbies are very androgynous but the brain will still work to attempt to gender them based on appearance until the enby tells them their gender. Telling someone your gender can also influence how someone perceives you but that is a topic for another day. (2)
Most enbies will be mentally gendered by other people as a man or a woman. It is unfortunate for them due to social gender dysphoria, but it's true. This is the reason why anyone can be attracted to enbies. If an enby can be perceived as a woman, then a lesbian has the potential to be attracted to them. Enbies are included in every sexual orientation. If it were possible to be only attracted to the binary genders, then it would also be possible to be attracted to only the nonbinary gender(s)—skoliosexual (3). You cannot tell if somebody is nonbinary and there is no way to tell without having insight on the person.
Now I'm going to give you a few quotes that will help assure that you know that bisexuality has never been an attraction to two genders, two or more genders, or more than one gender. They represent decades of bisexual history.
"Bisexual—being emotionally and physically attracted to all genders" (4). 2003.
"Bisexual: A person who is attracted to people regardless of gender" (5). 1998.
"Do not assume that bisexuality is binary" (6). 1990.
Because too many people believed the misconceptions that bisexuality is binary or exclusionary, other multi-sexual labels were created. These new labels contributed to the misconceptions unfortunately. "Pansexuality is all, bisexuality is two" is incorrect. Bisexuality is all.
Please, whether you're bisexual or just an ally, do not let decades of bisexual activism go to waste. I used to believe that bisexuality was "more than one" or "two or more" until the subject was brought up to me and I was presented sources. Bisexuality will not become little more than an umbrella term. Bisexuality will not be erased. Bisexuality will not be redefined. Bisexuality will not be misconceptualized. Bisexuality's long and beautiful history will not be ignored.
In conclusion, bisexuality is the potential to be attracted to individuals of any gender. But most importantly…
Bisexuality is enough.
