Point of View: Ghost Bird

Rounding the corner, my eyes easily find the large white church at the end of the cobble stone street. I am unable to draw my eyes away from it as we slowly approach. I had only been gone for a short amount of time but it felt as though I had been gone for years. I was finally home. Slowing, I fall out of step with the others, completely distracted as I admire the new paint job. Whom ever had completed it had done the beautiful Italian architecture justice. I stare at the molding for a while completely lost in the design. It is only when Mel squeezes my arm that I pull out of my head and realize everyone else has gone inside.

Smiling, I move up the steps and into the church. My eyes run over the familiar stone work and the stained glass windows. I am quickly distracted however, as a rush of neighborhood children rush through the side door and into the nave. Bending down, I place Mel onto her feet. She instantly goes to meet the neighbor hood kids but pauses. Frowning, I watch her turn and look back at me hesitating. As if wondering if I was going to disappear right before her eyes.

Giving her a nod, she smiles looking relieved and rushes off with the group. Watching the group disappear out the back door, I slowly make my way to the old wooden door that stands at the back of the room. Stepping into a large comfortable living room, my eyes trace over the donated mismatched furniture. Taking in the familiar warmth, I move to the small hallway to my immediate left. I lightly skim my hand over the wall as I step into the doorway of the kitchen.

The kitchen is one of the smallest rooms in the church. It is square with the entire back wall and about half the wall to the left with counter space and out dated appliances. My eyes flicker to the window just above the sink at the center of the back wall that looks out to the back yard when an annoyed voice captures my attention. "What are you all doing in here?!"

I smile leaning against the door frame watching Lee, a shorter Korean girl with long black hair pulled up in a high pony tail, stand at the center of the room in front of a small table placed in the back right corner of the kitchen. Her hands rest on her hips in frustration as she shoots a couple of glances to not only the strangers but also my crows who are all crowded around the small room. The strangers shoot glances at each other clearly a little confused as to why they had all gathered in the kitchen as Apa sits at the table with Aaron at his feet, a small smile on his lips.

All five of my crows are forcing their faces to go blank in anticipation. Confused, Zach shoots me and I bring my finger up to my lips, ushering for him to be quiet. Realization hits Zach as I stand silently in the doorway watching. "They won." Apa states smoothly running his hand against my pup's head. "You should have stayed for the end."

Lee frowns and shrugs shifting her stance as she holds her arms against her stomach. "I couldn't..." She frowns glancing to the other crows who are fighting hard to keep sullen faces. "I need to get dinner started." Lee moves to the sink putting her back to everyone and the pain in her voice stabs at my chest.

There are a couple of moments of silence as excited and confused looks are shared with each other behind Lee's back. "We are going to need another place setting." Apa states and I watch as Lee freezes at the sink. Instantly she spins to Apa who smiles.

"Another place setting?" She utters repeating Apa's words as though she doesn't believe them. She rushes to look at the other crows. Jose gives a goofy grin as the others smile in return nodding. When Lee's eyes meet Mikael's and he simply nods to me in the doorway. Turning, I meet those dark black eyes and watch them widen.

"I am still invited to dinner right?" I tease and watch as Lee completely looses control and breaks into tears. Zach's mouth drops open and both Rafa and Kyle's eyes widen as the normally very composed girl completely looses it.

Sobbing she rushes across the old tiled floor and into my arms. Smiling, I squeeze her tight into my chest. Sniffling, she pulls back after a couple of moments to take me in. "When did you get back?" She whispers rubbing her face with her fingers pushing away her tears.

"This morning." I smile lightly brushing a loose strand of hair out of her face. "I was kept in meetings till this afternoon. Just managed to make it to the end of the game."

Lee sniffs trying to hold back the tears and Jose chuckles. I watch as Lee spins to the boys growling. "You knew!!!" She grabs Jose's ear who instantly lets out a pained groan. Danny, Ari, Max, and Mikael laugh and quickly make their escape out the back door. Apa smiles watching as Jose breaks out of Lee's grasp and dashes out with them.

Lee sighs and shakes her head looking to Apa as he stands from the chair. Giving a gentle hug to the girl, he makes his way out of the kitchen following the boys. Aaron moves to follow but pauses looking to me. Looking to Lee the girl smiles at the silly pup.

"Go enjoy. I will call you in for dinner." She smiles and I nod smoothly making my way to the door. "Welcome back Izzy." The words hit me hard and I pause in the doorway looking back to Lee.

"I'm home."
