Luna, her initial anger faded away, was in almost disbelief about the fact that, for the first time, she had detention all because of Sirius freaking Black. To make matters worse, Luna was running late because she accidentally turned right at the Sir Edward painting and not the Sir George painting. The day she finds her way to a classroom without getting lost is the day Luna will quit Hogwarts. Not that anyone had to worry about that anytime soon. At this rate, she's more likely to marry Sirius Black, her new sworn enemy, than to find a classroom on the first try with no help.
"Miss Lupin. You're late." McGonagall announced.
"Sorry Professor. I took a wrong turn."
"You've been attending this school for months now, and you're telling me you can't find your way to a classroom you go to at minimum twice a week?" Luna bit her lip. This was beyond embarrassing. Sirius sat cackling in the corner and making faces at her behind McGonagall's back.
"No. I don't know why I can't."
"Well I won't tolerate this any longer. One day you'll have to be able to find your way around without assistance from your friends. I suggest you make a map to help you." A map. Of course! Now she just had to figure out the most efficient way to make this map because Merlin knows she needs it as soon as possible.
"That's pathetic you know. Little Lupin needs a map to get around Hogwarts. Don't know how you could possibly be one of the best in the class." Sirius sneered.
Luna opened her mouth for a witty retort before remembering her vow to never speak to him again. She shut it with as much force as she could, gave the best glare she could muster, and turned away from him sharply to began organizing the textbooks by hand.
"You're actually going to give me the silent treatment? You have to be joking. Luna Luna Luna Luna Luna Luna Luna Luna Luna Luna Luna Luna" This went on for quite some time. Sirius continued to try to get a response out of Luna, who was doing her best to ignore him. She reminded herself to breathe in and out evenly and think of her happy place. But Sirius was dead set on aggravating her, so by the time detention was over, Luna was quite angry.
She stormed out of the Transfiguration classroom without caring about where she was going as long as it was away from Sirius. That's how she found herself in the Clocktower Courtyard, where she made the astute observation that it was a full moon.
How could she be so forgetful? She looked at the clock and noticed it was almost morning. It's really a crime that they keep children up so late for punishment, Luna thought. Of course she would've finished earlier if it weren't for Sirius. But the full moon pushed away any anger she had towards Sirius at the moment, as she had to focus on getting ready for Remus to return. And because of the late hour, she thought it was easier to go straight to the kitchens instead of going back to her dorm and waiting for the morning.
Luna snuck into the kitchens, careful to avoid any teachers. In there she met Burns, her favorite house-elf. "Ms. Lupin! To what do I owe this honor?"
"Burns. Two things. Don't call me Ms. Lupin. I prefer Luna. And two-do you ever sleep?"
"Only when absolutely necessary Ms. Luna." Luna just rolled her eyes at the house-elf's insistence of using formal prefixes like Miss and Mister. She loved the little creatures, so she decided to let it slide.
"Well Burns, it's a full moon. So I need your best hot chocolate and some magnificent chocolate bars if you will" Burns immediately set to work to please his favorite student. She and Marlene provided lots of entertainment and work for the house-elves: their two favorite things. As a bonus, their work was always repaid through the generous gifts Luna and Marlene occasionally brought. Their Christmas gift included copious amounts of chocolate and some new pillow cases.
