Nine Months Laters

"Good morning Kelly," Lauren smiled as she passed the receptionist, "how was your vacation?"

"Absolutely wonderful, you should consider visiting South America whenever you have free time Dr. Anderson." The older women replied, looking up from her computer.

"If only," the doctor chuckled as she grabbed her clipboard and headed for her office, "I'll be with the next patient shortly Kelly."

Gently closing her door behind her, Lauren blew out a sigh and placed her bag on her desk. Lately the hospital had been crazy and she could feel the work taking its toll on her. Grabbing her coat from behind her chair, the brunette caught sight of a picture of herself and Barry from her college graduation. Smiling sadly, she picked it up and stroked her thumb against his smiling face.

'Keep me strong today Bar.' Lauren thought as she set the frame back in its place and slipped on her coat. There wasn't a day that went by that she didn't think about her coma ridden best friend, but she eventually had to move past dwelling on it and get on with her life. After all, it's what he would've wanted for her.

"Show time." The brunette sighed as she plastered a smile on her face and went to greet her first patient of the day. If there was one thing that keep her mind from wandering back to Barry, it was her job. She loved coming to work, despite her constant complaints, and helping people get better.

"Good morning Mr. Saunders," Lauren greeted as she opened the door to her first patient of the day, "how are you feeling this morning?"

"Like I could bike in the Tour de France, Doctor." The elderly man laughed as she made her way over to his iv.

"Well, I'm glad that the pain in your side has let up Mr. Saunders." Lauren chuckled as she took note of his fluids. Mr. Saunders was one of her favorite patients due to his humorous remarks, it always brought a smile to her face whenever she had to swing by to check his vitals.

"Okay, it looks like everything is running smoothly for right now, but I'll check back up in an hour or so," Lauren said as she double checked her data and made her way back over to the door, "use your remote if you're feeling uncomfortable and the nurse will be here as soon as they can."

"Thank you Doctor." Mr. Saunders smiled as she exited the room and checked for her next patient, only to have her pager go off in her coat.

'I wonder what's up?' Lauren wondered as she navigated her way back to the front desk. Kelly never usually paged her unless it was an absolute emergency, and this hospital never got more than three a month.

"Kelly? Is everything okay?" the brunette asked as she set her clipboard down on the counter, "is someone in critical condition?"

"There's someone here for you," Kelly smiled as innocently as she could without laughing, "says that he couldn't wait for an appointment."

"Well, could you tell him that I'm on a tight schedule and will make room as soon as I can?" Lauren replied with an incredulous look on her face. Kelly knew the procedure with her seeing patients, so why was she letting this person be an exception?
