SOMETIMES WHEN I feel overwhelmed, climbing up trees is a fun distraction. Usually I focus on the highest branch and try to reach it, but that's not why I do it; I climb trees because I love the view. It's the beautiful simplicity of feeling detached from the world and yet somehow connected to everything.

Besides, having the ability to literally look down at everyone gives me a sense of superiority.

The day had turned into a gloomy afternoon as I hung out with a group of Slytherin boys at the base of my favorite tree. They called me their friend but clung onto everything I said like sheep; most of the time I wished they would act normal, like when we were kids. They changed -but then again, so had I.

Blaise Zabini was the closest thing I had to a genuine friend, and yet he didn't really know me. Not completely.

After half an hour of mindless chatter I had about enough, tossing my bag aside and pulling myself up onto the tree. The boys paused and looked in my direction, Goyle muttering, "What's his problem?" The rest of them shrugged before getting back to their pointless conversation as I shifted into a comfortable position and stared out into the courtyard.

My eyes wandered aimlessly until I spotted Blakes and Potter hugging in the distance. I furrowed my eyebrows, wondering if those two were a thing as I continued watching them socialize with a group of Hufflepuffs. Some people might find me watching creepy, but I was just an observant person.

A couple minutes later, I spotted an apple on the ground and a brilliant idea popped into my head. "Accio apple," I summoned, sending it flying through the air. As I caught it in my hands, I racked my brain trying to remember which spell could reverse the rotting and change it back to being edible again. Concentrating on the spell, I became too distracted to notice I'd gained an audience of one.

The apple brightened in color and a satisfactory smile broke into my face. Once my lips wrapped around the fruit to take a bite, I noticed Blakes looking up at me with an expression I couldn't quite read. Hesitatingly chewing on my bite, she made a face. This one I could definitely read.

"What now?" I asked.

"That apple you're eating. I'm pretty sure it was rotten."

"I reversed its age," I shrugged, taking another bite.

"Yeah, well... it was still on the floor," she crossed her arms, making me roll my eyes.

"Why do you care?"

"I don't. Just curious," she frowned.

"Haven't you heard that curiosity kills the cat?"

"Good thing I'm not a cat, then."

She hadn't walked away yet, which was surprising but I decided to play along. Turning the apple to its other side without the bite mark, I lightly wiped it against my school robes. "Better?" I joked and raised my eyebrows. Griffin squinted her eyes turned to leave when I called out, "Where'd your boyfriend run off to?"
