     DRACO WAS a mystery.
He reminded me of a puzzle that, no matter how many times I tried, was simply unsolvable. "It was pretty shit that they chose you to be Diggory's... treasure." Draco chose his words warily, clearly uncomfortable speaking the last one. "Yes, it was rather absurd," I admitted, not sure what he was aiming at.

There was a pause before he spoke again, the statement coming completely out of the blue.

"So you and Diggory -personally I don't see it."

I coughed in surprise. "What?"

"He's too boring. Too vanilla," he spoke with an almost offended tone. But why would he be offended? "Something tells me that you want someone who lives on the edge a little, not some goody-two-shoes. Someone who isn't afraid to break the rules," he argued, slowly closing the space between us.

At this point, I was cornered up against a tree and felt déjà-vu from our morning conversation. The situation escalating caused my heart to stutter, but I managed to maintain a neutral facial expression.

"Let me guess, someone like you?" I retorted, proud to have come up with the quick-witted response.

Draco only smirked at this, his eyes flickering down to my lips. I panicked internally, not understanding why this was happening. I was a Gryffindor and muggle-born for Merlin's sake! For years he'd picked fights with me and my friends, so why pay this much attention to me now?

My breath hitched as he leaned down, his height towering over me. I froze up again, nervous but curious to see how far we'd let this go on. I knew he was going to try to kiss me, and it wasn't like I tilted my face up to meet his. However, I wasn't exactly shoving him away either.

Then my common sense kicked in.

And I knew now that there was an attraction between us, I would be stupid not to. But what about Cedric? We had been avoiding the 'what are we' discussion, but I knew he wanted a relationship. So I couldn't do this to him.

"I can't," I whispered right before Draco's lips would have brushed against my own. He let out an agitated sigh, taking a step back and staring at me.

"Why not... Griffin?"

I licked my lips, trying to formulate my thoughts into words. "Because-"

"Griffin!" a voice called from the main dock. Draco and I snapped our heads in the direction of the voice I knew far too well.

"Diggory," Draco gritted through his teeth, stepping further away from me.

"Hey," the Hufflepuff approached us, concern marked all over his face. "Is there a problem here?" he asked me skeptically, not taking his eyes off Malfoy.

"No," I croaked, my voice hoarse from the cold. "Draco was just leaving."

Hurt momentarily flashed through Draco's stormy eyes before his face hardened. "Right," he muttered, shoving gloved hands into the pockets of his jet-black coat and storming away.
