CHAPTER FIVE
GRACIE

As soon as Lissa and I check in to a motel for the night, I flop down on the bed and groan.

"What is it, Gracie?" Lissa asks.

"We're going on a trip with a stranger and she's really nice and I can't function." I complain.

"Why can't you function?"

"Cause my brain is mush and I look stupid." I'm not being particularly rational, but I don't really care.

"You don't look stupid," Lissa says kindly. She sits next to me on the bed.
"But if you want, we could give you a makeover or something."

"What kind of makeover?" I ask, looking up at her.

"Whatever you want," She says. "One of my cousins told me how to dye hair with Sun-In and Kool Aid, so we could do that."

"Okay," I say.

"Really?"

"Sure. What color should we do?"

"Um... blue, maybe? It would match your eyes and look good with that sweatshirt, since you wear it all the time."

"I like blue. Let's do it."

"Oooo! Can I give you a haircut too?"

"Why not, I guess."

"Yay, this day is awesome!" Lissa says, grabbing the keys.

"You're welcome," I tell her, grabbing my shoes.

"Sounds great."

"Keep your head still," She instructs. "And stop it with the scissors. I'm gonna use those on your hair."

"I have no idea what you're talking about," I say, moving my hands to my lap, and continuing to clip my nails.

"Fine, just be careful."

"Okay, okay."

Lissa continues to work on my hair, and I start counting the tiles on the bathroom counter. When she's done, she instructs me to sit in front of the window so the sun can lighten my hair. She sits cross-legged on the bed, and faces me.

"So, about this 'not functioning' thing..." She says.

"I dunno, I just think she's really nice and I want to be her friend," I say, enjoying the sun on my neck and shoulders.

"What about me?" Lissa asks. "Are you replacing me?"

"No! you're my best friend," I say. "Addison's, like, different."

"Yeah... well, get back to me when reality hits," Lissa says.

"What?"

Lissa ties her dark hair into a ponytail, and stands. "I'm gonna go mix the hair dye. Stay there, otherwise it won't work."

She then precedes to lock herself in the bathroom, leaving me with my swirling mind.
