CHAPTER SIX
ADDISON
❨ ♯ * ⋆ 💜 '𝟖𝟓 ❩Oreos are breakfast food, and you can fight me on that. After finishing a hearty, healthy meal of sandwich cookies, I drag my suitcase outside and wait for Lissa and Gracie. I gave them my address, so I'm sure they'll come soon.
My mom was not particularly happy when I told her I was leaving early, with strangers no less. I reminded her that I'm eighteen, and can technically make decisions for myself. She sighed and locked herself in her room. I feel a little bad, despite the fact that I'm leaving because of my parents. I hope we'll understand each other more eventually. Unlikely, but who knows what could happen?
I see a car driving down my street, and Gracie rolls down the window to shout a hello to me. Lissa, who appears to be the designated driver, pulls over and gets out of the car. Gracie follows suit.
"Hello, ladies," I say, my voice dripping with mock charisma. "I can't help but notice that Gracie's hair is a rather lovely shade of blue." Not only is it blue, but its cut into a choppy bob. It doesn't look bad, but its clear that Lissa was behind this particular change in style.
"We were bored," Gracie says, her cheeks flushing.
"Well, that boredom shall end soon. I'm here now!"
Lissa laughs. "D'you wanna get back on the road any time soon, Ms Excitement?"
"Yeah, sorry," I say. "Where should I put my suitcase?"
"I've got it." Lissa lifts my suitcase and puts it in the trunk.
"Hey," Gracie says, coming up next to me. "What do you think of my style change?" She strikes a model pose, similar to those in Seventeen or Vogue.
"I think it's super cute. Reminds me of one of Anais' friends." I don't remember if I've mentioned Ani or Saph by name, so I clarify "My cousin, Sapphira's, wife."
Gracie nods, looking a little surprised. But she just rolls with the 'wife' thing, saying "I guess I'll fit right in with everyone in California."
"Yeah. Well, their little hippie corner, anyway."
"Hippie corners are cool," Gracie says simply.
"Come on you guys, let's go!" Lissa yells from the drivers seat. "You'll have plenty of time to talk later."
"Chill out, Mel." Gracie rolls her eyes and turns to me, asking "Do you want the front seat?"
"Won't you be lonely in the back?" I ask.
"Nah." She shrugs.
"I'll sit in the back with you if you want," I offer.
"Sounds like a plan. Let's go before Miss Lissa gets too annoyed." She grabs my hand and pulls me toward the car.
❨ ♯ * ⋆ 💜 '𝟖𝟓 ❩ I'm not sure whether Gracie realizes she's still holding my hand, or if she does this with everyone and I'm just overthinking it. She's laughing at something Lissa just said, her wavy hair blowing all over the place due to the open window. Looking at her (from an objective point of view, of course), she's a very pretty person. I probably shouldn't notice this, since the last time I said anything remotely gay it didn't go very well. However, noticing things is very different than saying them or acting on them.
"Addie," Lissa says, breaking into my train of thought. "Hey, did you hear me?"
"What? No, sorry." I shake my head.
"I was asking if I could give you a makeover too," Lissa says.
"Liss believes strongly in makeovers," Gracie explains. "Especially when something new is going on."
"It's a great way to transition into a new phase. Anyway, Addison, what do you think?" Lissa says.
"Okay," I say. "What do you want to do?"
"I'm not sure. We can stop by a store somewhere and get a magazine for inspiration."
"She just wants the latest issue of Vogue," Gracie mutters.
Lissa sighs, but doesn't deny it. I laugh, and Gracie shoots me a sideways smile.
