— CHAPTER TWENTY-SEVEN,
what of lincoln?"OKAY, TELL US AGAIN."
"It's a labyrinth." Clarke glances between Bellamy and Ruby as they discuss the Mount Weather tunnels. "It's all connected to the mine system. That's our way in."
"Sure, if we can get past the Reapers and the Mountain Men. I swear to God, if your mom doesn't sanction a mission soon. . . I'm going by myself." Bellamy tells her.
"You won't be by yourself." Ruby pipes from her spot beside Bellamy. Both pairs of eyes fly to her. "Hell, I might even be gone by the time you decide to head to Mount Weather."
Clarke eyes fly past the couple. Both watch as an unreadable look appears in her eyes. The couple turns to see Finn approaching them "Guess the inquisition's over." Bellamy says before turning back to Clarke. "How's Finn doing, anyway?"
"I haven't talked to him since we got back." Clarke answers. "I don't know what to say. He just kept shooting."
"We're at war, Clarke. We've all done things." Bellamy explains. Ruby glances over at her boyfriend, trying to decipher the double meaning in his words.
Bellamy's eyes find hers. There's a lost look on his eyes. A frown takes home on her face.
Ruby knows she has no room to talk about murder. An attempt at it is what got her locked up in the Sky Box in the first place. She's killed nine people already.
"Hey," Finn says as he joins them.
"Hey." Ruby and reply in union. Finn's eyes narrow slightly at the them. Clarke doesn't say a word to Finn. She presses her lips in a tight line. Finn notices, his eyes darting to the ground. Ruby grimaces and Bellamy's shoulder awkwardly tense up. Bellamy speaks up, "next round's on us. Come on, Ru."
Neither waste any time in rushing to their feet to escape the awkward conversation that's bound to happen between the two. Ruby's hand find her eyes. She rubs them, trying to chase away the tiredness she feels. When she pulls back, different colors and spots swim in her vision. She blinks furiously to get rid of it.
"You okay?" Bellamy glances down at her.
She nods quickly. "Yeah, just rubbed my eyes too hard."
Bellamy shakes his head at her with a small smile. "How are you, Ruby? I mean, seriously."
Their eyes lock. Suddenly, Bellamy's smile is gone. It's replaced by concern.
"I held my best friend as she died. I've killed nine people. My parents are dead. My only other best friend is trapped inside Mount Weather where they drain Grounder's blood and will most likely move onto our people next. So Bellamy, I'm doing absolutely amazing right now." She breathes out. "I'm sorry—"
He pulls her into his arms without hesitation. She wraps her around around his middle, burying her face in chest. Bellamy keeps one hand pressed against the back of her head, cradling her to him. The other balls her shirt in his hand. He shuts his eyes and tries not to think about everything his girlfriend has lost.
He presses a gentle kiss to her forehead, too scared she might shatter in his arms.
Ruby Carson is like glass.
Strong enough to withstand the pressure but hit her with too much force and she'll shatter.
