"Hey Pris, I'm going to take the trash out so we don't miss the trash people again, I'll be back in just a minute," my dad calls to me from the garage.
"Wait dad," I say entering the garage, "I'll just get up early tomorrow and put the cans out. It's way too dark out now and I've been hearing some weird noises these past couple of days, so I don't want you going out there."
"It's fine pumpkin, I'll just be a minute, you go back inside and choose a movie for us to watch," he says with a smile I can't refuse.
"Okay okay but be quick! I'll pop some popcorn for us too."
"That's sounds great, be right back," he says before opening the garage door and wheeling the first can down the driveway.
I leave the garage and go to our massive bookcase of movies. Even though Christmas was last month, I pick up one of our favorite Christmas movies and pop it in the DVD player before going to the microwave to make popcorn.
I grab a few blankets from the closet too and once everything's set up I go upstairs to ask my mom if she wants to join.
She's listening to music and folding laundry and I get sidetracked with helping her.
A few minutes go by and I finally remember why I went up there. She agrees to take a break from folding and goes downstairs with me. I expected to see dad sitting on the couch trying to get a secret head start on the popcorn, but when we reach the couch, he isn't there.
I start to get worried when I see that the garage door is still open, letting a cool breeze into the house. I call his name, but when he doesn't answer I go outside to check on him.
I stop halfway down the driveway and freeze, not believing the sight in front of me.
At the end of the driveway is my dad lying on the ground in a puddle of his own blood. He's holding his neck and trying to ease the pain, but I can tell he's slowly starting to lose consciousness.
I scream.
I fall to my knees and put my hands over my mouth to try to control myself. Hearing my scream, my mom rushes outside, and once she notices dad, she runs to him and tries to keep him conscious.
She yells back to me to call an ambulance and I rush inside to find my phone. With my shaky hands, I dial 911 and try my best to explain the situation and tell them my address.
Since we don't live too far from the police station, they don't take long to arrive. The ambulance pulls out a gurney and starts transporting my dad onto it while the police rush up to me to ask me questions and make sure I'm okay. At that moment, everything starts to speed up and become a blur. From that moment on, the only thing I remember is my mom getting in the ambulance to ride with my dad to the hospital, the flash of lights fading as the ambulance drove farther down my street, and the female officer wrapping me in a blanket to try to comfort me and waiting with me till my aunt arrived to pick me up.
. . . . . . . .
I didn't return home until a week later. Within that span of time, no one told me news about my dad because they wanted me to think positive thoughts, but the whole time I was worrying about him. When I was finally taken back home, my mom broke the news to me that he didn't make it. She started discussing funeral arrangements she'd made while I was gone and what was going to happen now, but I was too stunned to listen.
After the funeral, my mom got a suspicious call from someone high up at her work. They said she was getting offered a better job in a small town called Fallrose and that they already had a new house lined up for us. She thought this would be a perfect opportunity to start fresh, so she went to her office, signed some papers, and here I am now, packing for my new life.
