Cows. You never know what is going on through their minds. You see them like usual, eating wheat or grass along with their cow friends and BOOOM! They go rampage around the city to ruin the lives of the citizens of Adventure Bay. Or at least that was what Ryder the pups first thought when they received their orders.
"Anything, Skye?" Ryder asked driving through the city, frustrated by the fact that it was the second time that had happened.
"Nothing, Ryder." She replied.
"Chase, deploy your drone to cover more area."
"On it." Chase parked nearby a flowers stand and did as he was said. The device flew over Main Street on its way to Town Hall, and then turned to Mr. Porter's Cafe. How such big farm animals could escape so often? It's ridiculous.
"Nothing here, nothing on Town Hall, not-"
He reacted at the sight of white fur and black spots, a cow? Well, no.
"What are they doing here?" On screen, Marshall was chatting with Mr. Porter with Everest next to him. It seemed like the casual talk the owner of a restaurant would have with their clients, but after all Chase had "investigated", those two together had other meaning. He proceeded to activate the microphone on the drone and was able to hear part of the conversation. Not cool, honestly.
"All ready then pups", the moustache man said, "7 o'clock , table 4."
"Thanks, Mr. P." Marshall thanked.
"We've got to hurry. They should be returning from the mission by now." Everest continued.
"Right. See you, Mr. Porter!"
"Bye pups."
This is really not cool, even if it was just by accident. Chase had just hit the jackpot with this mystery, which went from totally hopeless to goddamn bananas. The urge of jumping right in front of their astonished faces would have been priceless, but the quality of a good detective is patience. But, the operation was settled. 7 p.m. table 4.
"Found anything, Chase?"
"Nop."
* * * * *
"Hey guys", Rocky saluted. "Everything alright?"
"Yeah, as always", answered Skye, "just for the fact that Chase's kinda..."
Zuma was about to inquire, but there was this hideous smell coming from said pup from behind. "Dude! You totally need a bath ASAP!" It was kind of painful. "What happened?"
"We rounded them up at the farm, but one tried to escape", explained Ryder, "Anyway, Chase followed her, and somehow returned with mud all over his fur. He could have just used his net to prevent the cow from getting away, but..."
Chase rolled his eyes, even though he knew Ryder was right. "I'm heading to Katie's."
"After that, mind explaining why you were in the wrong gear for the mission?"
"Sure thing."
Things started ti get awkward between them.
* * * * *
"Ok, Chase, you're ready", Katie said once she finished drying Chase's fur with the towel she just hung.
"Thanks Katie", Chase said while hopping off the platform. He really liked how his fur felt after a bath with that new shampoo. This unrelated fact reminded him of some issue that was brought up during breakfast about the girl cleaning in front of him.
"So Katie... how was your date last night?"
Oh, that precious shampoo in her hand, had just slipped from it and was sent into the air. After some flips in slow motion it knocked an unlucky cat nearby. Chase wouldn't admit that it was kind of funny. Poor Callie now needed a bath too. Katie didn't react to apologise and remained standing still.
"I-It was fine."
"Just fine?"
"Y-yeah, it wasn't bad." She cleared her throat. "I wouldn't call it excelent either, but..."
I can't pretend I didn't hear that.
Just when he was about to push the subject further, he noticed the hour on the clock on the wall. 6:47, almost time for certain encounter.
He thanked Katie and waved goodbye. He hurried to his pup house and got his spy gear again, because getting in trouble once wasn't enough, right? He quietly drove without even turning his lights on, and made it to the bridge in no time.
Quick drive through the city. Chase drove through until he noticed both Marshall and Everest walking towards Mr. Porter's. There was a tree behind the parking lot that would make a good hiding spot, just above the tables of the restaurant. Getting too close himself would be troublesome, so the drone in his truck would do the trick. He barked out the device and it flew right above the tree branches, high enough for the propellers not to alert them of its presence. Chase activated the camera and microphone and gossiped from the screen at the back of his vehicle.
Apart from the obvious insanity Chase had fallen into for preparing all that stuff, something else was odd. It wasn't particularly suspicious, it looked rather common. They were just chatting about random stuff for the first minutes.
"No, not yet."
"At least we will have more time to prepare everything."
That part almost flew over his head, as he tried to position the drone closer, causing the two pups to turn to the sky. Chase was quick to retreat his flying thing, but it got stuck on the branches he was hiding behind. And now the camera was in an odd position, not close enough to listen to their conversation. Quite the spy, isn't he?
Oh no, they're about to leave the table. Chase turned off his expensive toy and hopped off his truck. He spotted the two pups walking down the street. The shepherd took advantage of the treetops and roofs in the dark to go unnoticed, but not being able to hear anything apart from their steps.
Just below an oak tree close to the playground, Marshall and Everest sat down on a bench. Just stretching out in silence, no words spoken, for several minutes. It was the sign of a somewhat awkward situation, which Chase noticed. They played with their paws, got closer, looked away, looked back, locked their eyes with one another, and inch closer and closer...
Just kiss already...
And they did.
Oh, wait! WHAT?! They really did it! They did it! They actually did it!
Chase's jaw dropped to the floor as he stared at the scene in amusement. The process in his mind connected the dots and figured out the whole story. The mystery was over.
Mission accomplished.
He made his way to the Lookout with a relieved look on his face. But oh boy, this was far from over.
