One of the three moons were at its highest, the stars were doing their work and shining beautifully all night long in the borders of the Ice Kingdom. The whistles of the wind were as silent as day while a NightWing held an egg to her chest. She had been flying for such a long distance that her wings were already used to the pain that coursed through her veins.
She was sweating heavily and panting like there was no tomorrow.
Starseeker didn't go that far in the Ice Kingdom or she'll have to face the Great Ice Wall, which would kill her and her precious black and blue egg.
We're so close, my darling, she thought to it, clutching it closer to her and letting her warmth pass on her egg.
She looked up at the full moon, which shone over an area only a few meters away from her. She didn't land, she kept hovering over the snow. Flurries flew past her, making her shiver like crazy.
There, right there, that's where you will hatch.
She inhaled deeply and exhaled widely, then shot to the spotlight of the moonshine. She grunted in torment as she crashed into the snow and in the center of the moonlight.
Her silver dazzled with blindness when she looked up at the moon.
Then suddenly, a cold talon placed itself on her shoulder. She jumped and yelped, turning her head in startelement to see the dragon behind.
When she saw him, she sighed in relief.
"Oh good," she gasped. "It's only you, Polaris."
The IceWing smiled at her and gazed at the beautiful egg in her talons.
"Are you alright?" He asked her worriedly. "Are you hurt? Have you been spotted by another IceWing? Is the egg okay?"
Starseeker held the egg up high into the moonlight, making it sparkle like a star. They both awed at it.
"Beautiful, isn't it?" Starseeker said, stroking it with one claw and lowered it down, holding it near her chest again. "Do you think it will be a male or female?"
She handed the egg to Polaris gently and carefully. He took it from her talons and tilted his head at it. "I'm not sure. But I think it would most likely be a female."
The NightWing chuckled. "What makes you think that?"
Polaris shrugged. "Just a guess. I could be wrong."
He tenderly gave the egg back to Starseeker. "I need to go quite soon. There will be some IceWings looking for me. I won't be here when our dragonet hatches." He said sadly. "But you can't raise her or he here in the Ice Kingdom."
"Why?" Starseeker asked, hugging the egg.
"She's part NightWing," Polaris explained with depression. "No IceWing will accept her, even if she has IceWing blood. They hate all NightWings. It's best to raise her in the NightWing Island. They'll treat her or him better there."
"But—"
"Please, love," He said.
He took the egg again and steadily placed it in the snow under the moonlight.
"It'll hatch any moment now." He pointed to a small crack in the egg. "Take care of our dragonet. Make sure she/he grows up to be one of the greatest dragons on Pyrrhia."
"How will I do that?" Starseeker asked.
"Train the dragonet," he answered courageously. "Train her/him very well right when the egg hatches. Our dragonet could play an important role. I want this little one to be special."
