I was looking at my book at the counter, waiting for my shift to end so I could close the store, go home and read, when I heard the bell above the door clink.

Working at the convenience store isn't bad. Most of the time I'm just the cashier, and the most work I get is to ask for peoples ID when they want to buy alcohol or cigarettes. But sometimes I'm put on what we call the restock duty, and I have to refill the shelves with whatever. It's a bit more interesting than being a cashier, but then it actually feels like I'm working.

I looked back at the door with a tomato can in my hands as a woman stepped in. She was dressed casually, in comfortable clothes, and her blond hair fell a bit messily on her shoulders. For a second she looked lost, her head scanning above the aisles, surely looking for a clerk. Me.

"Good evening, miss," I said, standing up and smiling at her. She was half a head smaller than me and she didn't look much older either. I wondered if she was new in the town, if maybe she came to study in the university. "You can call me when you finish and I'll scan your stuff for you."

She smiled and nodded, and I let my eyes linger on her for a second. She had light-brown eyes and a dimple in one of her cheeks. She was absolutely gorgeous and I immediately wanted to slap myself out of embarrassment as I crouched down to put the cans on the shelves.

Pretty girls were gonna be the death of me.

I kept half of my attention on her, listening to her whereabouts, making sure she wasn't going to try any funny business. I didn't know this pretty lady and I was alone in the store at night, so yeah, I was suspicious of her, as I would be of anyone that entered through those doors.

Slightly less than if it was a man, if I was completely honest.

I didn't have that many cans left, so I walked behind the counter, waiting for New Girl to come. I could see the very top of her blond head and it made me chuckle. She was just so tiny.

I quickly grew bored of watching her head, so I opened my book as she kept searching for things for herself, but I couldn't focus. I've never seen her, which was weird because most of the people were familiar because they were recurring customers. Which again, made me think that perhaps she was new and going to university. If that was the case, I hope she didn't live close by, because we weren't really close to the campus.

She came by, holding her full basket and I started scanning.

"I hope you don't mind me asking, miss," I start, and I when I look up she's staring back at me, an easy smile on her lips, "but I've never seen you before. Are you new in town?"

"Yes, I am," her voice is clear and makes me smile back at her, "a friend helped me get a job here."

A part-time job? Or a job job? How old was this lady?

I nod, not sure if it would be too inappropriate to ask more. I was just as curious as the next person when we had a new face in town, but I didn't want to intrude.

I bagged her products and waited as she took bills from her wallet to pay.

"Well, I hope you like it here," I smiled again, knowing full well being new wasn't always easy. I gave her the change and she smirked at me.

"I'm sure I will," and to my surprise she winked before walking out.

I stood there, looking at the door, in absolute shock. Was a wink considered flirting? Had she just flirted with me, or was I seeing things? It was a trick of the light, probably.

Still, I felt my face growing hotter as I walked back inside to get my backpack.

I turned all the lights off and locked the store before adjusting my bag in my back and unchaining my bike. It wasn't a new bike by any means, but it took good care of it, and even after almost four years, it barely made any squeaky sounds when I rode it.
