Dad's already back at the hospital, so I spend my days with Jackson and Rory when he's not at home. We go to the park and swim in the river and I take mom's old camera with me to take pictures of the green trees and of my friends.
Laura and Abby went to the beach with Laura's parents, and Matt went to visit his grandparents, so it's mostly just the tree of us. Sam joins us one day or the other, but I think he hangs out more with the other soccer boys.
"Do you want to see a cool thing?" I ask Rory and she frowns a little from the sun before nodding.
I clear my throat dramatically then cock an eyebrow up at her before whistling.
It's a perfect bird whistle, and we hear other birds around us mimicking it. I sing it back and soon there's at least three different birds chirping around us.
My mom was holding my hand as we walked down the street. I was whistling, something loud and out of tune, making mom chuckle.
"When did you learn to whistle, Spencer?" she asked. I smiled proudly, stuffing my chest.
"Alone! I saw dad doing it and I learned alone!"
"You're doing great, Spencer. You sound just like the birds in grandma's house."
"Momma! Do you think they'll understand me?" She laughed, picking me up to kiss my cheek.
"I don't know. Are you a little sparrow?"
"What's a sparrow?"
"The bird at grandma's. The one that sings like you."
"Yes!" I put my little fists up and she squeezed me before putting me on the ground, her smile never fading.
"Let's go get the groceries then, sparrow."
I giggled, and kept whistling horribly as we walked into the store.
"What the fuck? Are you Black Canary?" Rory asks, and I blink, coming out of my memory. I have no idea who that is and she must have seen the confusion on my face, because she explains, "bird superhero."
I shake my head, and Jackson is looking at me with a surprise expression before he smiles and puts an arm around me.
"I haven't seen you doing that for a long time," he says and I sigh.
"I know."
"Can you do other birds?" Rory asks and I think for a second.
"I don't know. I never tried," I shrug, leaning back and lying down on the towel to look up at the sky. It's perfectly blue, and it seems like we're having a perfect, cloudless week ahead. "Maybe if I hear them I can try."
She hums and I close my eyes, letting the warmth of the sun hit my skin. It's peaceful, even with the kids yelling around as they play and I feel happy. Mom would've loved to be here with us and if I try hard enough, I can almost feel her kissing the top of my head.
I'm happy.
We dry off and Jackson drives us to his house, and I see Mr. Jones on the sidewalk, talking to a burly tall man with a baseball cap. Jackson hits the honk, making him jump and wave at us.
"When are you going on your trip with Ms. A?" Jackson asks as he pulls over and I smile.
"We're going to the city on Friday," I say, climbing out and closing the door.
"Cool," Rory says.
"I can't believe you're ditching us for your girlfriend," Jackson says dramatically, opening the door and letting us in, "what happened with 'friends before girlfriends'?"
