"we were too young for this and we had to grow up way too damn soon."
***
KIROTA NOTICED THAT HER KIDS WERE CHANGING. Their moods had declined into a more serious state.
Her beautiful twins were no longer bubbly and happy. They were now angry, and hardly ever laughed.
Kentaro felt a new type of pain watching his best friend suffer. Keni was the one suffering.
How were they supposed to be happy? They both had to grow up faster than they should have.
"Mom, can I get a snack before I go to Keni?" Kentaro asked his mother as she drove him to school.
"Of course, Darling, do you need some money?" she asked.
The boy nodded. Kirota reached into the pocket in the car door and pulled out enough Yen for him to buy a snack. She extended her arm back and handed him the money.
"Thanks, Mom."
He took the Yen and stuffed it into his backpack. Kirota looked in her mirror to see her son crossing his arms and frowning.
"Keni gets to do school at the hospital, I should get to do school at the hospital too." Kentaro said as he crossed his arms.
"Kentaro, being at the hospital is not a good thing. Don't think for a second that your sister is luckier than you." she said with a bit of anger.
"I know, Mom. I want to do school with Keni so I can make sure she is okay. She is not lucky, Keni is sick."
"Dad, where's Kentaro?" Keni asked from her bed with half-closed eyes.
Kaji sat down next to his daughter's bed and grabbed her hand.
"I'm sure he's on his way, Sweetheart. What did you do today?" he asked.
"I watched volleyball. I watched Adlers play against a team I don't know. Adlers won of course." Keni said.
Suddenly, fast footsteps were heard down the hallway. Kentaro rushed in and threw his bag on the floor before jumping onto Keni's bed.
"I got onigiri for us!" he exclaimed.
Keni instantly smiled and took one with her arm that didn't have the IV in it.
"Yum!" she said.
His kids were happy, Kaji could tell that they were happy, but it wasn't like it used to be.
They would jump around with bright smiles and all the energy in the world.
Now they were very calm and serene sitting in the hospital bed together. Keni was eating quietly while Kentaro talked about his day at school.
It was civil, unlike conversations between most six-year-old children.
They had grown up too fast. Too soon.
They would grow up without innocence and the luxury of being naive. Keni became extremely sarcastic and difficult to carry a conversation with. Her ways of talking instantly drove people to dislike her.
Kentaro grew up with pure anger over his sister's condition. He became aggressive and difficult to even approach. People would talk about him and claim he was a violent boy.
But when they interacted with each other, it seemed like their rude natures melted away. Not entirely, but mostly.
Because they had unconditional love for each other.
Without each other, they were incomplete.

hey everyone, so if you didn't know this book actually correlates with a story i'm also currently working on called POWER and it is an ushiwaka fan fiction. this story, that story, and two more stories that are soon to come are part of a series so in order for this to make complete sense i would definitely read that one too!
