"Anna! Please help with breakfast, these pancakes smell like poop!"
My baby brother David - although being a dramaqueen - was not wrong. I smelled them as well and let me tell you: it wasn't pretty. Walking down the three steps of our 'stairwell', I yelled: 'Dad, get your ass out of there, we all know you suck at making breakfast!' I heard him scoffing softly, so I added: "Cooking in general, really."
I walked into our "Well sweetheart that's harsh. But I am sure you could do way better..?' He said, pleadingly.
I sighed. 'I guess I don't have an option, since Jake and Cam are still sleeping. Besides, you know Ms. Jefferson gets cranky when David shows up late..'
'Thank you, honey. I'll go and wake up those lazy asses. They'll take you and David to school in a minute, okay?'
I smiled. My father, John, was not exactly the stay-at-home dad type. He did the best he could, though. And considering I had my three brothers to deal with as well, I knew I had to help out a lot too. Helping out, however, meant cooking, doing the laundry and making sure my brothers, especially my older twin brothers Cameron and Jake, passed at least 60% of their tests. I'd never complain though. After mom died, we all had to adjust, and after all, how old-fashioned it may be, I was a girl and thus the only one that knew how to do the laundry.
'You go get dressed as well, you have to be at the Walter's in a bit.' My father, who was a bodyguard, grinned sourly. 'Way to ruin my morning, sweetheart.'
A mere 10 minutes later my two older brothers appeared on the breakfast table, which would be most accurately identified as a cross-breed of a picknick table and one of those plastic tables you find at lowscale diners.
'You have exactly four and a half minutes to eat, shower and brush your teeth', I noted while setting down two plates of fresh blueberry pancakes in front of my not-entirely-awake brothers. 'David needs to be on time for a change if we want to escape Mrs. Jennison's wrath and Cam, you have your biology test first period. Did you study the functioning of the golgi apparatus again, like I told you to?'
It took my older brother a while to answer. Their brains didn't really function all that well in the morning.
'Uhh, is that the one that looks a bit like a stack of pancakes?'
I sighed. 'It's one of the most important cell organelles we have. Without it, a lot of your cells, the white blood ones for instance, wouldn't be able to function properly because they can't secrete fluids essential to our survival.'
My other brother, Jake, grinned. 'If only our little sister could take our tests in our place.'
I scowled good-naturedly. 'Laugh all you want Jakey, but if you fail your Chemistry test tomorrow after I spent hours explaining the Avogadro law to you, I might just be inclined to let Leslie loose on you..'
Leslie had been my best friend for ages. She was in a lot of aspects the exact opposite of me: rich, gracious and poised. She was known, however, about her extraordinary quality of humiliating boys that didn't behave nicely very publicly. She was the queen of pranks and had never been afraid to stand up for herself. I'd always admired that quality and had never stopped wondering why she, who could be Queen Bee of Serenity High, had chosen the dorky duckling a.k.a. me.
Anyway, her reputation as 'ball-breaker' (I didn't come up with it) knocked the wind out of a lot of guys and it explained the sudden scared look on Jake's face.Chuckling softly, I walked away to get my little brothers backpack, collect his books and put some food in it.
After I'd finally got everyone together and settled the discussion between Jake and Cam - they both wanted to drive - I gave my dad a quick kiss and we set off for school. Little did I know that this day wasn't going to be anything like the others..
