(We are only in chapter four and I have only covered 2 of the chapters in the original story. Also, old readers please don't spoil it for the new readers. Thank you !!)
Jungkook was used to every month checkups. It was normal, but now he would have to tell them about his latest episodes and how things are happening more frequently. He doesn't want to face reality just yet.
When his mom and him arrived at the hospital, they were immediately called back to his doctor's office. Dr. Seong welcomed them with a smile and let them sit across from him.
Jungkook sat with his head down as Dr. Seong and his mom talked since he had no idea what they were saying. Their conversation lasted a while before Jungkook was tapped on the shoulder.
"How have you been doing, Jungkook? Anything changed since we last saw each other?" Jungkook nodded at his question, but he didn't want to admit the more frequent symptoms out loud.
"Alright, well I won't force them out of you but we will need to know before this visit is over so we can make sure that we have everything correct in your charts. We are going to go ahead and order some scans on your brain and see what's going on. Sound good?"
Jungkook nodded again. He didn't want to be here. He had three tests that would all take up to three hours in total. All of this for a checkup. Jungkook sighed.
Dr. Seong asked the boy to follow him to the CT room to have his first exam done. While they were walking to the exam room, Jungkook noticed he didn't hear anything he typically would with his hearing aids. Typically, he would be okay with this. But now that he was in a hospital, he felt as though he needed to hear what was going on. He couldn't hear the distant chatter between patience and visitors, he couldn't hear the carts being moved up and down the halls, he couldn't hear the beeping of heart monitors.
They finally reached the room, his mom stayed behind in Dr. Seong's office. "Alright Jungkook, you know the drill. Let's go ahead and get these tests over and done with so we can get you out of here." Jungkook nodded.
He laid down on the bed and waited for the test to begin. When he felt himself being moved into the cylindrical machine he closed his eyes and stayed as still as possible. The test lasts thirty minutes and during the time Jungkook continued to count backward from one hundred since he kept him calm.
The MRI was the same test except for just a different version of the scan. He laid on the bed and waited for the test to start. Again, he counted back from one hundred over and over until the scan was complete.
Soon, the test was over and he followed Dr. Seong into another room that held more machines. This test, he would be with nurses instead of Dr. Seong and have electrodes stuck onto his scalp. This was honestly his favorite part of the check-up because he and the two nurses would talk and joke around. Today was different, the world was silent so he couldn't joke with them to lift his mood.
This proved to be the most difficult test since Jungkook couldn't hear the nurse speaking to him during it so they canceled the test altogether and decided they would do it next time.
They met back with his mom and sat in the office. Dr. Seong left them to see what his scans were and to retrieve a pair of hearing aids for Jungkook. He wondered why they didn't do this beforehand so he could have talked to the nurses but assumed it had something to do with the system.
When Dr. Seong returned, he handed Jungkook the new hearing aids and asked him to put them on. The boy did and he was able to hear the world again. It felt weird at first considering it went a day or so without them, but he would readjust.
"I going to talk with your mom about some things I have seen on the scan. I would prefer you to listen along but it's your choice," Dr. Seong expressed. Jungkook could only nod. It couldn't be that bad.
"Now, first off. I can't do a complete workup and know exactly what is going on unless I hear from you, Jungkook, what has changed since last month." He stared at the younger boy who just looked down and nodded his head.
Jungkook looked up at the doctor and sighed. He began to sign, "I started throwing up and having seizures more often. I have had serious mood swings and trouble sleeping." Jungkook looked down again and waited for Dr. Seong to reply.
"It makes sense. Your tests don't look that good if I am being honest. They could be worse, granted, but I wouldn't say you're in danger just yet. You have been fighting this since you were fifteen, I wouldn't let you give into it just yet."
Dr. Seong took a breath and flipped through the charts before starting again. "Now. Surgery is an option. We have done it before, but there is no guarantee that it will stay away this time. We could also do treatment but that would require Jungkook to stay in the hospital more than he would be in the outside world."
The younger boy took a deep breath and looked over to his mom for the first time since they had been there. She had tears in her eyes. She looked devastated. Jungkook wanted to comfort his mom but he could hardly contain himself, as well. This wasn't what he was expecting.
"Well, Is there a prognosis?"
Jungkook whipped his head to the side with wide eyes at his mom. He couldn't believe she had just asked if he had a death date. He felt betrayed. He didn't want to know how much time he had left. He didn't want to know anything more than he already knew.
With that, he stood up, excused himself, and walked out the door to the nearest bathroom.
