Chapter Ten: Mellissa
The kiss was like fire, searing my veins and my heart. I felt like flying, floating, never coming down. It was better than any drink I’d ever drunk, better than any feeling I’d ever experienced. She smelled amazing, like sunshine on water. I felt her sink into the kiss, swallowed up whole by my emotions. I kissed her back harder, with everything I had in this world. I could feel her arms pull me in closer, even though there was less than no space between us. She was delicate and fierce at the same time with her kiss, holding me tight in fear while urging my lips with her passion. I never wanted to stop.
It felt like hours, but it only lasted a few moments. As we drew apart, I felt my heart racing and my face heat up. Luna’s pupils were huge and her breathing was sporadic. I looked down at her shocked with myself, I didn’t know what I’d just done. I ruined everything, now I she would never consent to sleeping in the same bed with me ever again, or travel with me, or even consider looking at me. “Uh,” I said struggling for words her lips still fresh in my mind, I didn’t know whether she was mad at me or not, “Luna, I, um---.”
She put my finger to his mouth cutting him off. “Shh,” she whispered moving her face closer to mine once again, “Stop talking.” This time, she pressed her lips to mine. My eyes closed and I moaned quietly in relief. She put her arms around my neck and into my hair, dragging me closer to her. This was better than anything I'd ever done with any other girl before. This was something else all together. I could feel her magic zipping across my skin and the power within me urning to respond to it. I held it down and just focused on kissing her. I was kissing her, or she was kissing me. It was hard to tell with our lips moving, murmuring softly against the others. She pulled back slightly to look in in my eyes.
I was reeling for air; dizzy spots were swimming in my eyes. Luna seemed to be in the same state, breathing jaggedly and closing her eyes. “Well that was unexpected,” I said.
“How so?” she asked blinking her eyes to clear away her fogginess.
“I just didn’t expect you to, you know…” I said trailing off and looking at her in wonder.
“Kiss you back?” she guessed smiling at me. “And whatever made you think that?”
“I don’t know,” I said feeling a bit abashed; “I guess that I thought that maybe you didn’t think that, what you wanted was that I was---.”
She put her finger to my lips again. “Gabriel, you’re babbling.”
I smiled under her touch and reached up to feel the hand she had on my mouth. I took her hand off my lips and flipped it so that her palm was facing upward. I leaned down, and put my lips softly against her palm. She closed her eyes and sighed. The barest brushing of my mouth on her soft skin sent shivers down my spine
I pulled back and watched her opened her eyes. I sighed, content and sank down on the ground. She lay down next to me, resting her head on my chest. “That was…interesting,” I murmured. “I thought I could control myself better.”
“Control has nothing to do with it,” she said into my shirt.
I put my arm around Luna's shoulders and held her next to me, “I wish I could stay here forever, with you that is.”
I could feel her smile into my chest, “If only,” she said. “But we can probably only stay here for a little bit. We need to start searching.” Then she frowned and sat up.
"What's wrong," I asked worriedly. Maybe she'd changed her mind about me, or maybe she had seen or heard something approaching.
“What did you do to get rid of the bandits?” she asked hovering over me with questions in her eyes.
I tensed and she narrowed her eyes at me. She didn't know yet. Maybe she didn't need to know until later. I winced slightly at the thought of her finding out what I did to those men. She would never want to see me again if she found out.
Lucily though, she saw me wince and her eyebrows shot up in concern. “Your injuries!” she cried out forgeting what she had just said entirely, “Let me see them. Now!” I lay still and watched her as she prodded and poked, examining my face and body for bruises. Seeming to find none, she looked up. “Take off your shirt.” she said.
My eyebrows raised and I smiled craftily, “Luna, I realize that you and I are attracted to each other, but isn’t it a bit soon to start---.”
“Would you just shut up and take off your shirt!”
I chuckled, sat up, and slipped my shirt off over my head wincing slightly. There was a small pain in my chest. I saw her eyes linger slightly longer than necessary on my chest before she gasped. I looked down to see my body covered almost everywhere in bruises and there was a bright red patch of skin around the ribs on my right side. She reached out to touch it and I flinched. “Lie back down,” she said pulling her hand away from me, “This’ll just take a moment.”
Bracing myself for healing, I lay back down on the ground. She placed her hands over the spot where the broken rib was and muttered the spell for healing. All most immediately, I felt better. The pain in my ribs was gon and based off the glance I took, the brusies had faded from purple to yellowish. “You should be just fine now,” she said glancing back up at me.
i was looking back at her, my face feeling a little flushed from the magic going through my system. “That was…” I said, struggling for words to describe it.
“Incredible, amazing, inspiring?”
“I was going to say dramatic, but whatever you think works.”
She grinned and helped me to my feet. Pulling my shirt back over my head I heard her say: “Come on, we need to start searching for Mellissa again.”
“Actually, that won’t be necessary.”
We spun around searching for the voice that had come from nowhere. Not seeing anyone, I turned, confused to look back at Luna and nearly had a heart attack. Standing right next to her was a slightly short older woman. I was about to demand to know who she was and why she’d sneaked up on us, but then I noticed something. Unlike most women in my country, she had dark black hair and blue-purple eyes.
