Chapter Eleven: Mysteries Revealed

Mellissa was serving us tea. She’d lead us back to her house which was only a short distance away from the clearing we’d been in. It was a quaint little cottage, with ivy growing up the sides and herbs on the window sills. She brought the tea tray to the wooden table we were sitting at and set it down, making the china shake slightly. “So,” she said looking at Luna, “you’re a witch.”

“Yes miss,” Luna said looking at her with eager eyes. “I came to ask if I could---.”

“Yes, yes,” she said waving her hand and pouring herself a cup of tea, “You’re lost in the ways of instruction and came to me for advice.”

“How did you know?” I asked shocked. I mean, she could have guessed but still.

She smiled, “You have no idea how often I’m asked that, my dear. If you really must know, it’s because I specialize in visions of the future.”

“Specialize?” I said confused.

"I was especially gifted with seeing visions of the future." Mellissa said, "Several years ago I saw a vision of two young people, a boy and a girl, coming to me to train." She put her tea kettle down on the table, "I had only assumed that you would come quicker. I've been waiting for ages."

"Sorry to have kept you waiting," I mumbled sarcastically.

Mellissa nodded, “Apology accepted," I almost spewed my tea out, did she really have no idea I'd been joking? "This I have seen," she said, "I pictured a boy and a girl traveling through the woods to find me. I knew you would have some trouble with bandits, but I had no idea how much trouble.” She took a sip of her tea, “I had stopped waiting for you for several years, I suspected that what I had seen might've just been a dream; but when I went out to look for the wild berries that are blooming this time of year, I saw the bandits with you and was about to intervene when this young man beat me to the chase.” She reached out and spooned some sugar into her tea, “I’ll admit that I just sat back and watched. However, I didn’t expect to intrude on a personal moment.”

I glanced at Luna and felt my face grow hot. “I, uh---.” I began to say.

“Please, my dear,” Mellissa said taking another sip of her tea, “I’ve had my share of passionate embraces, and believe me, I had no intention of watching you.” She set her cup in its saucer and sat back. “Now wipe that ridiculous blush off your face and listen to carefully to what I’m about to tell you.”

I took a sip of my tea and puckered at its unfamiliar taste. I was used to drinking ale, not ginger tea. Mellissa took a deep breath and began her story: “I used to be a very famous witch in my town, so famous in fact, that I was very prosperous. I gained money by providing visions of the future for my clients. Glimpses of the future were much desired, even though sometimes the future wasn’t all that desired. The future is not set in stone though, a single mistake or fact that isn’t taken into account can alter an entire vision. Sometimes things went the way I said they would and sometimes, like I predicted, things fell apart. But nevertheless, I was a very successful woman. I was young, talented, and, by the men in my town’s standards, beautiful.”

“What does this have to do with what Luna came here for?” I asked. “Your life story isn’t going to help us.”

“Hush,” Mellissa said, “I’m getting to the important part. This is vital information that you need to hear.” She continued:

“One of the people I would tell the future for was different from the rest. He was cruel, mysterious and powerful. I told him my visions for a while, before I realized what a monster he was.” She shivered slightly and proceeded to talk, “I talked to the town’s people and eventually came to know what was going on. He was recruiting people from the lands beyond our boarders to fight for him. He wanted to take over the country as its master from our ruler who he considered ‘a poor pathetic king’. Everything was going fine in my visions of his future. He was going to become a glorious and feared ruler of Aurium, a king of many years. Everything was set up for him to take over the country. But then something changed.”
