I scowl at Nate as I walk to the only empty spot in the entire classroom, which is next to him. The rest of the class consists of all the students, including myself, trying to listen to the terribly boring lecture and take notes without falling asleep. I glance towards Nate, wondering what he is doing here in the first place. I didn't even know he applied to this university. There are plenty of other great colleges that take a high school captain of the football team.
Anyway, once class is over, I let out a deep breath I didn't realize I was holding at the time. Deep in thought, I fail to notice Nate walking a few feet away from me holding a look that could make a million girls fall for him. Not me. Not again.
"I can see you are still a daydreamer", Nate says after a few moments.
"I can see you still stare at people like a creep." I comment back. "And how do you know I was daydreaming? Maybe I was planning out all the exciting events I wanted to do today." I know he used to be very popular and was surrounded by other jocks and cheerleaders who wanted to be in his friend group so desperately like he was their savior or something. I shake my head whilst remembering the times when people would just clap or applaud at anything he did.
He smirks the way he always does and sarcastically remarks, "I know a certain someone who liked me staring at them. Want to know who that is?"
"Not particularly." I know he is talking about me and I hate that he is bringing it up again. It becomes clear to me that he just came here to provoke me so I give him a look that I know will make him back off and walk away.
When I get to my dorm room, a mouthwatering aroma fills the small room. My roommate, Pearl, loves to cook and bake, especially when she is stressed about something. I have learned that the tastier the smell, the more bothered she is.
"Whose feet am I stepping on now?" I ask as she sprinkles some curry leaves around the paneer gravy.
"No one. It was my fault, I pushed her away." I sigh sympathetically and turn my friend around from the stove and hug her. She has always been the more daring and adventurous one, but that does not always mean she succeeds. She's kind of like my role model in that way. "It's better to try and fail than never try at all", she always reminds me.
We talk and eat for a while after that, from how crappy college life can be sometimes, to how hot this girl is in her class. I mention that Nate is in one of my classes, and that I am definitely not going to fall for him again. She nods even though I can tell she is only doing that for my satisfaction. She watches too many romcoms. Then again, so do I.
"I guess we will just have to see." I conclude as I finish off the last of the naan and paneer on my plate. She wiggles her eyebrows at me and I swat her arm playfully. I guess we will see I think to myself.
