There is nothing more some people want sometimes than to know that at least a little bit of their life is perfect. For some it's simply having a good day, but for others, like me, it's having your crush from grade school fall for you the way you fell for them.
Now I got the first half of the day all to myself. Well, sort of. Pearl said she was coming later this afternoon, so I decide to go to the park and get some homework done.
Sociology has always fascinated me. Learning about human behavior and society just clicks with me and makes me want to know more and more. I guess some could say I have a knack for it.
My favorite song comes on, so I start humming the lyrics of "r u ok" by Tate McRae. At some point, I think I have entered an alternate reality where everything just feels good and I suddenly feel this strange jolt of motivation to do my work and I'm loving it. I am acutely aware that that's the slogan for McDonald's, but who cares, I'm on a roll.
Without realizing it, a whole two hours went by and I have finished all my work. I just finished singing the lyrics to "Wonder" by Shawn Mendes when I hear clapping behind me. I instantly jolt up from the tree I was leaning against to find the one and only Nate Taylor. Is this guy following me now?
"Wow, I never knew you could sing! What can't you do?" he exclaims, clearly impressed.
"Uhh, a lot of things. I just really like this song." I say, not wanting to give away too much of what these songs mean to me.
"Ok well, I actually need some help in math right now, so would it be ok if you could come over for a bit?" If I didn't know any better, I would think he is nervous. Something in me tingles inside at the thought of that.
"Oh actually I have to get going now. I'm meeting Pearl for lunch, but I'll be seeing you this evening, right?"
"Sounds like a date. I mean sounds good," he says stuttering. Ok? Anyways, Pearl finally comes back from that party she went to, so we decide to go to Chick-fil-a and hang out for a bit.
"So, I'm guessing you had a fun time at the party?" I ask her suggestively.
"What no?! I mean yes, but not in that way. Lavie and I just hung out for a bit and wanted to stay over at one of our friend's house. Although I did find out that she and I have a lot in common."
"Ooooh!" I squeal like I'm a school girl.
"Stop it, I really just want to take things slow. I don't even know if she likes me."
"Oh well either way, she is lucky to have you. But that doesn't mean I won't come for her if she decides to reject you for liking her like that." It's happened before, and God knows I will never let that happen again.
We chat for a little longer, but soon she is called up by Lavender and she looks at me with hopeful eyes.
"Go ahead, I'll just finish up my shake and leave." I smile at her to let her know that I am happy for her and turn to my almost finished chocolate shake. I feel my phone vibrating so I pick it up to see who it is. It's my brother.
"Hey big brother," I say.
"Hey little sis, what's up?"
"Nothing much, just about to leave Chick-fil-a and head over to Nate's."
"Oh? I didn't know you two were a thing now."
"Oh no, we're not a thing. I'm just tutoring him, that's all." I say frantically.
"Ok, ok!" he says while laughing. "When did the tutoring start?"
"Just a couple of weeks ago, and speaking of which, I need to go, so byeee!" I end the call and dash to my car. It's already 5:30, I need to be there by 6:00.
By the time I get there, it's 5:40, which it isn't too bad. Honestly I could probably change into something nicer than the sweats I'm wearing.
I look in the mirror one last time, after changing outfits a million times for no reason whatsoever, and head out the door. Since he's my neighbor, it takes only a second to get there. I ring the doorbell and wait. Nate almost immediately opens the door, and I am welcomed by a Nate I have never seen before.
