~The Next day~
-December 30th, Thursday-
~Natalie's POV~
I lean my head on my husband's shoulder as we sit in one of the many courtroom's in Candor's courthouse. I look back after glancing over at the little boy that assisted in torturing me, "Your honor, I would like to call Miles Cameron Harris to the stand." My uncle Jacob, leader of Candor, and just about the best attorney in the city, says. And I watch the judge nod, and my older brother gets up on the stand, and is sworn in, before injected with the truth serum. "Mr. Harris, why don't you tell us a little bit about yourself?" My uncle Jacob begins his direct examination with. "Well, my name is Miles Cameron Harris and, as Dauntless' brand new alpha leader, Natalie Eaton, very recently made clear, I'm one out of two of her brother's. Triplet, brother's." Miles says, "And why exactly are you here today Mr. Harris?" Jacob asks next and my brother looks to me before looking over at Warren at the defendant's table, "Because, I'm here to make sure justice for my sister is rightfully served, regardless of a certain person's age." He says, making me smile.
"Who is this person you speak of? Could you point to them?" Jacob asks, and my brother points to Warren Pine, "Warren Pine. I'm aware that, the system and his attorney, wants to give this minor a chance for parole and I'm here to stop that from happening." My brother says, looking over to the jury, that of which was a mixture of all kinds of people and all kinds of factions. "Let the record show Mr. Harris has pointed to the defendant, Warren Jason Pine. So, without further ado, where were you and what were you doing the day of December 18th, Saturday?" My uncle asks, coming in front of the witness stand, "I was in Dauntless, in the pit, which is the center of life at Dauntless and, I was listening to my sister give her first speech as Alpha leader, given my brother-in-law, Tobias Eaton, had just stepped down." Miles answers, "When you were listening to your sister give this speech, did you happen to see or hear anything out of the ordinary?" Jacob immediately asks, and my brother shakes his head. "No, it wasn't until my sister announced that my nephew, Tobias Eaton Jr., was going to be Dauntless' upcoming beta leader." He answers, "And what exactly did you see and or hear?" Jacob asks, buttoning his suit jacket. "At first I saw a glare from the balcony all the way across the pit and I leaned out to get a better look. I saw a sniper rifle, and Warren Pine behind it, aiming. And I looked back at my sister and nephew, to then see a red beam on my nephew's forehead." My brother explains, and I was all ear's, as was my husband and family. "And what did you do then?" Jacob asks, "I didn't hesitate, that's what I did. I got my nephew out of harms way, just before Warren shot the rifle." Miles instantly responds, and my uncle nods.
"Thank you Mr. Harris, that'll be all your honor." He says, returning to the plaintiff's table. Warren's lawyer, who just so happens to be his older sister, Vivian Pine, stands and approaches my brother on the stand. "I just have one question for you Mr. Harris," She says, "Is it true that, not even hours after the incident, you had said to city detective's, 'It happened so fast, all I saw was brown hair and a gun and I reacted'?" She asks, pissing me off. My brother shakes his head, "That was a good attempt at putting words into my mouth but, no, I said 'it happened so fast, all I saw was brown hair, a gun, and a neck tattoo. A very specific neck tattoo." My brother answers, causing Vivian to scoff, "You expect this jury to believe your very spotty identification of my client? So much so you believe you'll get his chance at parole knocked off?" - "Objection! Argumentative." My uncle calls, and the judge looks to Vivian Pine disapprovingly, "Sustained. Nice try Ms. Pine." The judge says, Vivian nods. "Do you have children Mr. Harris?" She questions next, and my brother nods, making me look over to the other end of the long courthouse bench, over to my nephew and nieces from him, sitting with Grace.
"Yes, I in fact do have have children. Three to be exact, two daughter's and one son." My brother answers, looking to them as well. "And how old are all of them currently?" She asks, and he clears his throat. "They're all fifteen. Given they're a set of triplets." - "And if say, one of them had earned a city criminal offense charge," She pauses, "would you or would you not be at their aid, doing anything and everything you could to ensure their freedom?" - "Objection, Relevance." My uncle sounds off, "Goes to the witness's character your honor." Vivian Pine instantly defends herself, and the judge nods. "I'll allow it." The judge says, "Answer the question Mr. Harris." She tells my brother, and he nods to her.
